Description

A historic and enchanting escape, Snettisham Watermill offers a unique opportunity to stay in a beautifully converted mill, complete with original beams, a tranquil mill pond, and a location that puts the very best of North Norfolk right on your doorstep.

Stepping into Snettisham Watermill is like stepping into a piece of local history, but with all the modern comforts of a luxury holiday home. This Grade II listed building has been thoughtfully renovated to preserve its character—think massive oak beams and thick stone walls—while introducing a fresh, modern country aesthetic. Whether you’re watching the resident swans from the decking or curling up by the TV after a day at the beach, the mill provides a serene backdrop for a Norfolk adventure.

The story of the mill is deeply woven into the village’s past. While the current structure dates back to 1800, the site has been a hub of activity for centuries. At the time of the Domesday Book in 1086, Snettisham was recorded as having seven mills—more than any other village in Norfolk—making it a vital centre for the county's agriculture. The present mill was born out of a true community spirit; it was built by voluntary subscription for the benefit of the local people during a time of great scarcity when bread was hard to find. An original plaque still marks this heritage, reminding guests that this was once a place of refuge and shared effort for the neighbourhood.

The heart of the home is the expansive open-plan living area. Characterized by stunning herringbone flooring and original structural timbers, this space is zoned perfectly for socializing. The lounge area features a large, comfortable leather corner sofa scattered with plump cushions in shades of sage and plum—the perfect spot to relax.

The accommodation is versatile and spread across different levels with the bedrooms on the ground floor.

The property features modern bathrooms and tiled flooring throughout the lower levels, ensuring a practical yet stylish stay.

The exterior of Snettisham Watermill is just as impressive as the interior. Guests can enjoy a private outside area that looks directly over the tranquil mill pond. It’s an idyllic spot for a morning coffee or an evening glass of wine, listening to the gentle flow of the River Ingol and the sound of the birds. You can even see the original Sentinel sluice gate wheel, a nod to the building's hardworking past as a flour mill that operated right up until 1940.
