A Little Bit About Winfrith Newburgh

Nestling in the rolling South Dorset Downs and within the natural beauty of Hardy country, Winfrith Newburgh is a quiet conservation village complete with medieval church, manor house and numerous thatched cottages. Together with the Red Lion at the entrance to the village, there are several village pub/restaurants in the area, including the highly-recommended Sailor’s Return at East Chaldon.
Winfrith Newburgh is set in the heart of ideal, peaceful walking countryside and It is only 3 miles from the 'Jurassic Coast' - designated as England's first natural World Heritage Site - with its spectacular scenic wonders of Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door.
To the north is Winfrith Heath, one of the few remaining areas of ancient English heathland, home to many species of rare wild flowers and birds. Weymouth is 11 miles away, Dorchester 9 miles. The Isle of Purbeck is about half an hour’s scenic drive, where attractions include Corfe Castle, Kimmeridge and Swanage.
Beyond, the road leads to the outstanding National Trust beach at Studland - one of the cleanest beaches in the UK. Bournemouth, (20 miles), and nearby Poole Harbour with all their many attractions can be reached in about 45 minutes. In the opposite direction lie historic Abbotsbury (with its famous Swannery and Tropical Gardens), the extraordinary Chesil Beach, and further along the beautiful coastal road are Bridport and Lyme Regis.
To the North lie the famous cottage and birthplace of novelist Thomas Hardy at Higher Bockhampton, 18th century Milton Abbey, and Milton Abbas, a hillside street of almost identical whitewashed cob and thatched cottages set in a sweeping green stretch of continuous lawn. Other places of interest in the surrounding Wessex countryside are Britain’s only silk farm at Compton House, Sherbourne Castle (built by Sir Walter Raleigh), the magnificent of Maiden Castle just outside Dorchester, one of the largest collections of armoured fighting vehicles in the world at Bovington Tank Museum, and the natural wonder of the Blue Pool near Wareham.
