Description
Located just a 3-minute walk from the medieval village Castiglione di Garfagnana, Casa Massimo offers spacious rooms, a private garden, and a 9-meter pool exclusively for guests. This is the perfect spot for a holiday in one of Tuscany’s most picturesque villages. Enjoy stunning views of the historic Castello from the shaded rose covered pergola in the extended garden, which features mature trees for shade and a traditional wood-fired oven for pizza.The private villa includes two large bedrooms (one sleeps three), a generously sized living room, a well-equipped kitchen, and a bathroom with shower. Upon arrival, guests are welcomed with a hamper of fresh organic produce from the owner, Massimo, who also shares his homemade wine, olive oil, and cheese throughout your stay.
Guests visiting in late September or October have the unique chance to participate in the grape harvest and witness traditional winemaking.
Nestled in the heart of Garfagnana, often called 'Hidden Tuscany,' Castiglione is known for its breathtaking scenery and reputation as a center of musical excellence. There are 3 restaurants, 3 bar/ cafes, a grocery shop and green grocers and a weekly market in the village. The village is well known for its many festivals.
Castelnuovo, the nearby market town, has many restaurants, cafes, bars, supermarkets and all other types of shops. There is a tourist information office, train station and a weekly market selling a wide variety of fashion, household goods, flowers, fruit and vegetables.
The area of Garfagnana is known for it's scenery it is the best area in Tuscany for walking and outdoor activities. We have close ties with an outdoor activities company who offer many international class adventures.

By Clive on 19-Jun-2024We had the pleasure of staying in Casa Massimo for four weeks. Throughout our time Massimo kept us supplied with fresh eggs, cherries, wine and more besides. He is a generous host only too happy to invite us in to his cantina to sample local cheeses with his friends. It made for a memorable holiday. The house and pool are exceptionally clean and well tended. Castiglione itself is a good base for exploring the Garfagnana and has its own excellent alimentari, bar, new pizza restaurant and grocer. Recommended.
Perfect host
By Romana on 30-Aug-2024We are a family of four (kids aged 6 and 5) and spent a week in July at Massimo’s place. It was wonderful, set in the peaceful northern part of Tuscany. The location is perfect, with walking trails, mountain views, lakes, and charming small villages nearby. Major attractions like Lucca, Pisa, and Viareggio are also within reach. The village itself has a delightful ice cream shop, a small store, and a wonderful restaurant. The place had everything we needed and remained cool despite not having air conditioning. The pool and garden were fantastic, and our kids never wanted to leave. Massimo is a wonderful host. Although he speaks almost no English and we speak no Italian, he welcomed us with ham, cheese, and his homemade wine, and we had a wonderful evening together. We were pleasantly surprised to find a fully stocked fridge, including wine and prosecco. We definitely recommend Massimo’s place and had a great time. Thank you.

True Tuscany
By Nadine & Jeff on 15-Sep-2024Our family of three adult children and their parents gathered together at Massimo’s to celebrate each other and our Italian adventure. What a treat to venture into a true Tuscan community. We ate their food, drank their wine and enjoyed their true friendliness and hospitality. Massimo welcomed us on the first night with a table full of fun, laughter and food. His kindness continued throughout the week of our stay. You could not ask for a more genuine and generous host. He also respected our private times even though he lived above us. We certainly hope to return to this Tuscan treasure!
Home from home with the best host
By James H. on 02-Oct-2024A spacious property with loads of outdoor space (and pool). We were very comfortable here and could easily have stayed longer. The host, Massimo, is very friendly and most generous. We thought the village was charming and Castelnuovo is well worth a visit.

By Caimin on 19-Jun-2025Had a wonderful week! The host (Massimo) puts such hospitality on the mat and is so generous that it cannot be otherwise than that you feel welcome. The village is picturesque but wonderfully Italian. Massimo's house is comfortable and the garden pool is perfect. In addition, delicious wines were donated by the host. Highly recommended!
