A Little Bit About Coimbra

Coimbra is in Central Portugal where it is very green compared to other areas of the country and has breathtaking scenery, with lush green valleys and mountain ranges. This location is central to both major airports namely Porto and Lisbon and one hour and fifty minutes is a comfortable drive to both.
The nearest excellent beach is one hours drive and golf is 40 minutes. There are however many river beaches nearby, where one can relax in the sun and swim in the pristine clear rivers. All have cafés or restaurants with food and cold refreshments available.
Walking trails abound nearby whilst mountain biking and cycling is also popular. There is a paragliding club. Canoeing and kayaking is easy to arrange on the Mondego river about 20 minutes from Coimba. Horse riding is also available.
There are several discos and nightclubs in Lousa and surrounding villages. There is a multi lane ten pin bowling club about twenty minutes drive. Coimbra has many bars and restaurants. Taxis are relatively inexpensive compared to other countries. The area is also quite safe to walk out and explore. There is a large karting track in nearby Vila Nova de Poiares.
There are various historic churches, convents and castles to visit and also museums, both in Lousa and in Coimbra itself. A large Roman archeological site is situated at Conimbriga, which is about 30 minutes drive. The Convento de Cristo situated in Tomar, which is one hours drive from Coimbra, is a former headquarters of the Knights Templar and has absolutely stunning architecture and mosaics. This is a site not to be missed. The annual pilgrimage town of Fatima is also worth visiting.
