In the middle ages, Lunigiana, lost among valleys that open up before the mountain ranges of the Appenine and Apuan Alps, was home to 160 castles, 30 of which are still in a good state of preservation and many can today be visited and explored.

It is criss-crossed with hiking and biking routes, including the ancient Via Francigena renowned by pilgrims throughout the centuries, this trail extends from Canterbury in England down through to Rome.
