Thought we died & gone to heaven!

1st visit, thought we'd died & gone to heaven !
Have spent the last 8 winters there--need we say more ?
A paradise indeed!
By Debbie Hale on 23-May-2017
We just ended our 2nd stay with Mary & Bill & family at Monte Velho, and we are already planning a return trip. The villas are gorgeously built and appointed, with every need and convenience you can imagine (down to sunhats and sunlotion and condiments for cooking). They are spacious and comfortable and quiet, and with the patio, pool and gardens, they provide the perfect retreat from day trips around the Algarve. We have brought our baby (now toddler) twice, and he loves it, too. We cannot recommend highly enough!

Villa in beautiful quiet garden setting
By Louise Ahern on 16-May-2017
The 3 Villas are set in a rural tranquil setting amidst beautiful gardens around a 10 metre swimming pool. The Villa Catarina was well equipped, rustic, with 2 terraces placed for the daytime and evening sun with views down to the sea.
The owners live on site, and are available for advice and solving any problems promptly and efficiently.
Rates are cheaper than the western Algarve, which has more tourism than the eastern sector, where agriculture plays a larger role.
The coastal lagoons and Islands have great bird watching with Flamingoes, Spoonbills, and many other coastal birds with Storks nesting in many villages on roof tops etc. The downside is that the beaches are more difficult to access and not as attractive as in the Lagos area for example.
There are several good Restaurants in the nearby town of Moncarapacho, which I reviewed separately on TripAdvisor.
I highly recommend the Villa for those seeking a relaxing rural setting, comfort, but not luxury, and with good service plus an attractive price, particularly in low season.

Maria: a wonderful peaceful retreat
By Margaret Brown on 04-May-2017
A lovely Quinta. We really enjoyed our stay at this lovely place. We certainly want to go back for longer.
The garden is beautiful, the pool and houses too. It is just what we like, especially the peace and quiet but not too far from the pretty village with good restaurants and small shops. Ideal for us and our dog. Perfect.
Thank you for the beer and wine and the generous supplies provided in the house. A generous and kind gesture which deserves an extra star! No wonder this family run Quinta is so often booked out.
We had one last lunch at the Tapas+Drinks place on the church square before we left and it was excellent. The best meal we had and we regretted not having gone there earlier.

Long or short stays
By Graham M on 01-Apr-2015
Owners have been in the holiday letting business for 30 years and their local knowledge and experience of what holiday makers need (i.e. A Stress-free stay) is second to non.
The location is a delight and the letting units although to a traditional design are well thought out and well equipped.
Owners could not be more helpful and any requests for advice or help with problems dealt with quickly and efficiently--they are also great fun.

Home from home, Casa Maria
By Keith Said... on 30-May-2014
The reality exceeded the internet description and photos as our family of three stepped into Casa Maria, Monte Velho, one of three holiday villas owned by Mary Campbell. Clean, fully equipped and with all the finishing touches in place we were able to immediately slip into holiday mode in this very attractive and comfortable home from home. Well-arranged shrubbery ensured discreet privacy between the three properties which, nestled part way up a well-vegetated hillside, share a commanding panorama across the lower landscape to the sea six kms away. The friendly owner, Mary, either tending the gardens or at her nearby house, was always readily available with her local knowledge and assistance for any of our queries.
Despite the feeling of peaceful isolation, Faro airport is only 30 minutes away. Along with the small town of Olhao, 20 minutes distance, all shopping facilities are on hand. A mere 2 kms from Monte Velho is the small town of Moncarapacho with several small supermarkets and restaurants. We particularly enjoyed Snack Bar da Ana (actually a restaurant), situated in the cobbled town square, and another restaurant about 50 metres west of the main square on Rua do Carmo, 15 (forgotten name!). Both offered a wide, varied menu and were more than happy to adapt their dishes so as to accomodate our vegetarian diet.
We came to this part of Portugal to pursue our passion for birds and butterflies. There are many wetland sites to visit along the coast from Faro to Castro Marim on the Spanish border, all within one hour's drive of Monte Velho. A two hour drive north brings one to the steppe grasslands east of Castro Verde, home to Bustards, Sandgrouse, Harriers, Lesser Kestrels, and Rollers. Around Monte Velho itself we enjoyed Golden Oriole, Hoopoe, Serin, Sardinian Warbler, Red-rumped Swallow, and most nights we heard the peculiar sound of Red-necked Nightjar. On the butterfly front we recorded (and photographed most) 16 species within a fifty metre radius of Casa Maria, including our target species, the Two-tailed Pasha.
So. if you need to unwind in well-equipped privacy, we highly recommend peaceful Monte Velho, hidden away on the slopes bove Moncarapacho.

What a holiday!

What a holiday!!
• 5 of 5
We spent 9 days, with 4 children - 3 to 10yrs old in Casa Maria and it was absolutely perfect. The whole area is so beautiful and so well cared for, the little things that have been done and thought of makes here so special, from the beautiful paths up and down to the pool, which were great fun for little people, to mature gardens, barbecue area, privacy and hospitality which was second to none! I would recommend Monte Vehlo to any one, with or without children, amenities were perfect, all mod cons, wifi, TV with usb connection and so much more! Here is a brilliant location for families or couples of any age - could not fault it in any way! Thanks so much Mary, we'll be back to see ye all again!!
