Description

The Downton Abbey of Tuscany for fine, authentic surroundings! This prestigious wine estate is where former UK prime minister Cameron stayed in 2011 on the edge of lovely Chianti. Jamie Oliver is also known to visit.
Sleep up to 17, or add the optional upper floor and sleep up to 33.

This is a very special villa for a very special holiday experience! It's convenient for trips into Siena and Florence should you be intent on organising your own mini "Grand Tour". You can rent the main part of the grand 17th century villa - the lower floor and the Piano Nobile above - to sleep up to 17 people or you can choose to add the more basic bedrooms on the top floor and sleep up to 33 people. The choice is yours: for 17 guests or up to 33 as you require.

Set in 80 acres of olive groves and vineyards, with its own private park with a small formal garden, an ancient fountain, pristine tennis courts and private swimming pool, Villa Petrolo is deep down "genuine Toscana, with 21st century mod cons. It's a gem, and perfect for that special celebration. It's hardly to be wondered at that this villa has hosted the prime ministers of Britain and France as well as food guru Jamie Oliver. It would be hard to get better references for a holiday home!

As you can see, Villa Petrolo can be rented in two ways: the ground floor and the Piano Nobile (literally the noble floor) upstairs make a fine setting for up to 17 guests, while adding the simpler accommodation on the villa's top floor, means even the largest group, up to 33, fits very comfortably. The top floor accommodation is split into two apartments, one for 7 and the other for 9.

There are two kitchens on the ground floor - a "normal" one and a professional, stainless steel kitchen with all the facilities one could need for serving large groups. There's also an old brick bread oven in the grounds, the perfect focus for an outdoor pizza party. The ever helpful staff in the estate's office have two excellent local ladies on call who will cook for you at any time - one cook for smaller occasions, otherwise the two of them together. From breakfast to informal pizza to light lunches or elegant suppers, you just pay for the ingredients and their time - and you'll find out for yourself that it's not only a wonderfully economical way to live-the-life, it also gives you the kind of authentic Tuscan experience.
The ground floor reception rooms open directly on to the gardens and one can choose to eat under the shady pergola by day, under the stars by night, or in the villa's dining room. There's ample space to find a quiet nook or spend time all together. Between the ballroom upstairs (with its elegant Venetian chandelier), three sitting rooms downstairs and the large games room with pool table, space just isn't an issue. Down by the pool, there's a shady pool house where the fit can enjoy endless ping pong matches if they've had to abandon the tennis courts for the hottest part of the Tuscan day.

Luca Sanjust, Petrolo's owner, produces delicious organic olive oil from the estate's olive groves, but above all, he and his staff make some of the most sensually pleasurable wines in Tuscany. You can take an escorted tour of the estate's ancient olive mill as well as taste your way around the estate's well-stocked wine cellars during your stay. There are also three small, private lakes on the estate if fishing takes your fancy. The picture-book-perfect parish church of Galatrona is just a short stroll through an olive grove (very "Room with a View"!) if you want to check out the fine ceramics of Giovanni della Robbia (1469-1529). Go a little further into the hills and you will come to a local landmark, the ancient stone watch tower of Galatrona, built to dominate the area over 2,000 years ago.

Live like a genuine Tuscan noble; dine on local produce cooked in your own professional kitchen, served by candlelight in your own garden or dining room, accompanied by your own estate's wines. In other words, this really is the Tuscan version of life at Downton Abbey!

Dream come true

By Mary Elizabeth Beck on 18-Apr-2025

Petrolo is nothing short of a dream come true. My husband and I had the incredible privilege of getting married at Petrolo in June 2023, and the experience was beyond anything we could have imagined. We stayed in the villa for four unforgettable nights with 26 of our closest friends and family, and every moment was pure perfection. One of the highlights of our stay was having Petrolo’s chef prepare dinner for us each evening—a decision I can’t recommend enough. Marco worked with us to create a thoughtfully curated menu that our guests are still raving about. The meals were exquisite and added an extra layer of magic to our time there. It’s safe to say none of us will ever forget the enchantment of Petrolo, and we’re already dreaming of the day we can return. A special shoutout to Marco, who went above and beyond to make our wedding planning seamless. Planning a wedding from the US at a venue we’d never seen in person felt overwhelming at first, but Marco answered every question with care and ensured that every detail was handled to perfection. His dedication and expertise made all the difference, and we can’t thank him enough. I’m sharing some photos from our time at Petrolo because words simply can’t capture its magic. Whether you’re planning a wedding, a family trip, or a getaway with your closest friends, Petrolo is truly the place where dreams are made.

Fairytail holiday

By Mya Cohen on 19-May-2025

Everything at Petrolo was a total dream! The location was breathtaking, situated amongst the Tuscan hillside, overlooking the rolling greenery. The house itself was something out of a fairytale with each room beautifully decorated and purposefully thought out. We had the most amazing time here, and cannot recommend it enough. The staff were kind and helpful, and everything was arranged beautifully and smoothly.

Do you want to live in a real movie setting, with great food, wine and service. Come here! We stayed for 4 nights as a group of 20 people. They have everything you need for fun an leasure. Pool, tennis court, basketball hoop, ping pong table. Fantastic breakfast and dinners. Thank you so much Petrolo crew, we will miss you!

A perfect stay

By Mike Famigletti on 24-Aug-2025

Everything about this property is perfect! We were a group of 28, ranging in age from 3 to 75, celebrating our 50th anniversary. Our host, Marco, and his staff went above and beyond to make our stay a trip of a lifetime. The grounds are beautiful and the large outside seating area allowed us to take our meals in a breathtaking setting under the Tuscan sun. Chefs Francesca and Laura prepared three dinners for us. A plated dinner of antipasto, homemade ravioli, pork loin and a decadent chocolate cake to celebrate our anniversary and on two other nights pizza prepared in the wood fired oven. Pizzas kept coming to the table until we surrendered! All were delicious. Francesca and Laura also held a cooking class during which we made fresh pasta, focaccia, and tiramisu. They then cooked what we made and served lunch outside under the oak trees. Marvelous! It was unseasonably hot for early June so we were all thankful for the pool which was immaculate. Our rental included daily housekeeping which was quietly and unobtrusively carried out. The house was stocked with excellent Petrolo wines, olive oil, and honey. You simply pay for what you use. And use we did as we cooked some of our dinners and partied late into the night. The location of the villa strikes a nice balance- quietly set among 400 acres of trees and vineyard yet a 15 minute drive to the Bucine train station where you can hop on one of the several trains to Florence. You can also drive to many other Tuscan cities for day trips. We can’t recommend this villa enough. Thank you Marco and staff

Stunning

By S. Ross on 11-Oct-2025

Stunning vistas, plenty of room for a group of people. Beds were comfortable, we always had hot water and the heating and fireplace kept us toasty. Beautifully relaxing – we loved every moment of our stay here.

Spectacular view from house

By Rowland M on 04-Apr-2022

The really delightful team made us incredibly welcome. We stayed in Villa Costi, the highest up the hill, with stunning views of the snow-capped mountains on the other side of the Val d''Arno. Behind the house is a hillside and forest filled with walking and mountain bike trails, with the ancient Torre de Galatrona perched at the very top. I really hope to back soon
