A Little Bit About Périgord

The Perigord Noir (dordogne) is just 4 kilometres from the border with the Lot region. It is blessed with long hot summers, great historical sites and an abundance of gourmet delights. Villefranche du Perigord was a french Bastide town during the 100 years war, parts of the wall are still visible today. The region has numerous Chateaus and Castles from that era. They include the huge but exquisite Chateau Biron and Josephine Bakers( the 1920s black American burlesque dancers) home Chateau des Milandes. The medieval town of Sarlat and the city of Cahor are all within 45 minutes drive.
Everywhere you go in the region there are the vines of the Cahor and Bergerac wines. Cahors reds are dark and brooding and the Bergerac wines mirror the styles produced in Bordeaux.
As with all of France, food is an important part of daily life and there are many markets featuring fabulous fresh food. There are truffles, Ceps, foie gras, cheeses and many other regional products. If you don't want to cook yourself there are plenty of restaurants to keep you going. There is the Bastide restaurant which features fresh fish or a drive for 15 minutes to Chez Jean which has been in the same family for hundreds of years and recently had a film documentary made about it.
This sun-soaked region is exciting and varied, you should visit, to sample its joys : there is lots to do.
