A Little Bit About Almondbury, Huddersfield

Long before the Industrial Revolution Almondbury was an important part of Yorkshire, mentioned in the Domesday Book, and later the centre of a large parish when Huddersfield was just a hamlet at the confluence of two rivers. Nowadays Almondbury is a village packed with holiday cottages on the southern edge of Huddersfield, surrounded by some of the most attractive countryside in West Yorkshire. It makes an excellent walking centre as the farmland and woods are crossed with footpaths, and beyond the farmland are the wilder moors.

The jewel in the crown of the area is Castle Hill, an Iron Age site visible for miles around where the layout of a motte and bailey site can be clearly seen, and which provides a wonderful viewing point for a 360˚ vista of West Yorkshire. The Hill is a scheduled Ancient Monument and the Victoria Tower, built to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee provides an even loftier vantage point.

The Huddersfield area is centrally placed for travelling around Yorkshire and beyond, with Haworth and Brontë country 45 minutes drive to the north, Holmfirth a mere 15 minutes south then on over the moors into Derbyshire. The world renowned Yorkshire Sculpture Park can be reached in less than half an hour and the whole area is dotted with small museums and art galleries, historic churches and buildings. In fact, Huddersfield has allegedly more listed buildings in England than any other town except Bath! In short, something for everyone!
