Argostoli is the capital of Kefalonia, a relatively new city which was built after an earthquake destroyed the old one in 1953, not the first time the island has been hit and probably not the last. The British built an arched bridge over the Koutavos Lagoon that connects the city with the rest of the island. There is plenty to explore it has a a Museum of Archaeology with a collection of Mycenaean relics from the excavations around the island. There is a Historical and Cultural Museum which contains many relics of the British and the various occupiers of the island, as well as traditional costumes, furniture and tools. The main harbor of Argostoli is a lively place with a market on Saturday and lots of restaurants. The local Robola wine comes highly recommended. The main square is Platia Valianou, this is lined with tavernas, cafes and shops perfectly located next to a children's park. There are a couple of beaches in the vicinity of Argostoli called Makri Yialos and Plati Yialos which can be reached on foot. Both are very nice beaches but can be crowded in the summer. There is plenty of nightlife in Argostol.
