A Little Bit About Cantabria, Spain Cantabria is located in Northern Spain by the Cantabria sea between the Basque Country and Asturias. It was ranked #2 by Lonely Planet in the category of Best Destinations to Visit in Europe 2018. It’s capital is Santander, a gem of a city with one of the most beautiful bays in the world and where World Sailing championships have taken place at various times. Cantabria has without doubt some of the best beaches in Spain with surfing and other water sports being extremely popular with locals and visitors worldwide. It also has the most magnificent mountainous countryside including the Picos de Europa national park where the world Snow Running championships were held in early 2018. The region is prized for its priceless cave art due to a network of pre-historic caves of which Altamira (UNESCO) is best known. It is also known for its outstanding cuisine which has been rewarded greatly in the past two years by the Michelin guide. The region is fast gaining a reputation for its boutique wines especially white wines. The EDEN Project (European Destinations of Excellence) was awarded to Cantabria’s Trasmiera Ecopark in 2011. And even Antoni Gaudi has left his stamp here with the El Capricho building in Comillas. Cantabria is a magnificent place to visit and has the added benefit of still being relatively undiscovered by foreign tourists.
