A Little Bit About Fiskardo

Fiscardo offers a variety of outdoor activities such as visiting the many white pebbled beaches along the coastline that boast calm turquoise waters, kayaking, snorkelling, scuba diving, motor boat & yacht sailing where one can hire a boat or yacht for the day, hiking trails, daily boat cruises and ferry boat trips to neighbouring islands, dining at the many choice of cafes, bars and tavernas where one can sample traditional dishes of the island, wine tours, donkey trekking and paragliding. The great variety of souvenir shops on offer line the waterfront of the little fishing port of Fiskardo selling many different items, ranging from clothing, traditional sweets & wines of the area, artefacts and crafts.
The island has many interesting things to see and visit from nautical and environmental museums, ancient excavation sites and fortresses, caves, churches & monasteries, lakes and caves and villages to the many nature parks. The coastline has many coves so the variety of sea life is vast of which one is the sea turtles that live in the waters of the island and have become a great attraction.

Some must see attractions –
1) Myrtos beach – This blue flag beach was voted the most beautiful beach of Greece for several consecutive years. A 30 minute drive from Fiscardo.
2) Assos Village -Located 36 kms from Fiscardo and is known for its 16th Century Venetian Fortress built on the hill overlooking the village.
3) Melissani Lake – This subterranean lake with its crystal clear waters was discovered in 1951. The roof of the cave collapsed revealing the views below which can be visited by guided tour boats and is well worth a visit.
4) Drogaratri caves – Located close to Sami. These caves were discovered 300 years ago and was created into stalactites and stalagmites over the years by the rain. It’s known for its acoustics so many organized music shows take place here.
5) Mount Aenos - This beautiful majestic national park is located on the highest mountain of Kefalonia, hosting a rich species of flora/ fauna as well as animal life ranging from birds to reptiles.
6) Villages - There are several popular villages to see such as Poros, Skala, & Agia Efimia, that offer a variety of attractions and activities to do. One in particular is Sami which has been in the spotlight in recent years when the famous film “Captain Corelli’s mandolin” starring Nicolas Cage and Penelope Cruz was filmed here using Antisamos beach located near the village for some of the scenes that were filmed.
7) St Gerasimos monastery -Named after the patron saint of Kefalonia who was a monk. The church ordained him as a saint when his body remained intact. Many believe that his spirit has healing powers so the monastery is visited by thousands every year.

The Turks occupied Kefalonia in 1479 then 21 years later, the Venetians took over for 300 years influencing its culture, architecture and language. In 1953 a big earthquake hit the island resulting in great devastation with 90% of the buildings & homes been destroyed. One of the very few villages to survive the earthquake was Fiscardo where some of the original homes still stand today. The Venetian lighthouse that stands at the entrance to the little harbour of Fiscardo, dates back to the 6th century AD. One can take a scenic walk along a path leading up to this lighthouse with great views across the bay.

In 2006, a Roman graveyard was accidentally discovered by municipal workers excavating in the area. They found 5 burial sites together with gold jewellery, artefacts and copper coins dating back to Roman times between 146 B.C and 330 A.D. This discovery is very unique because nothing else like this has ever been found before on any other Ionian island. The natural beauty and tranquility of this island is what makes it so unique so it’s well worth a visit!!
