Peaceful time with the family
By James Holliday on 12-Sep-2026We stayed at Le Marais for a week as a group of six – three couples – and had a really lovely time. The house was one of the highlights of the holiday. It sleeps up to 12, so with only six of us we had loads of space, but I could easily imagine it working just as well for a couple of families or a bigger group. There is plenty of room to spread out without feeling on top of each other. What I liked most was the character of the place. It feels like a proper old French country house rather than somewhere that has been over-modernised. The old barn even still has the original cattle milking bays, which are a lovely reminder of the history of the property. You may occasionally see a spider, but that is all part of staying in an old house in the countryside! We spent a lot of time outside around the large wooden table, having breakfast or dinner and looking out over the countryside. It is incredibly peaceful, with lovely open views, and a great place to sit with a glass of wine at the end of the day. There are also some lovely walks straight from the house. The heated pool was excellent and got plenty of use, as did the BBQ. The kitchen is very well equipped, so cooking for a group was easy, with plenty of space for everyone to eat together. The lounge was another favourite spot, especially in the evenings. It was perfect for reading, relaxing after a day out or having a game after dinner. Parking is also very easy, with lots of space immediately outside the house. A lovely touch was arriving to find a complimentary magnum of red wine from the owners, which was much appreciated. We were there for a golf trip and the location worked very well, with Château des Vigiers and Grand Saint-Émilionnais both nearby. We also enjoyed trips to Saint-Émilion and Bergerac. Le Marais is a beautiful, peaceful and very characterful place. We had a fantastic week and would happily return.
A very peaceful, countryside villa
By Joanne on 29-Aug-2026The villa is like its out of a movie. So pretty and full of character. Fabulous pool, with a deep end. Swam 400m every day. A great enclosed garden for our little dog. The villa had everything we needed, it was cool inside even when it was in the 30’s outside. Comfy lounge area and well equipped kitchen. An amazing French character property. We would stay again.
Great place to stay

Beautiful farmhouse set in secluded, idyllic corner of the dordogne

The grounds are simply delightful, with buckets of space, a fantastic pool and brilliant shade, especially from the beautiful tree at the bottom - absolutely essential for our stay given the unseasonable June heatwave! The house offered a great balance of rustic charm and clean modern living, and again proved to stay delightfully cool as we sought frequent reprieves from the unrelenting southern sun. The nearby town of Saint-Méard-de-Gurçon was a perfect, cosy little French village with a good bakery and the nearby Padel, (<5 min drive) and golf course and driving range were excellent for keeping everyone entertained! We had a fantastic evening in Montazeau at Buckets as per James' recommendation, which we would heartily second. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will certainly consider returning to this beautiful bit of the world!
Magical week

Fell in love with the local towns and team activities such as padel in the nearby town. Can’t thank the hosts enough for always being on hand for questions and wine / dining recommendations. Such a special place we hope to visit again for many summers to come!
A fantastic holiday home
By Claire on 26-Jul-2025Le Marais is a gem of a find set amongst glorious French countryside based in the Dordogne region. This home is full of charm and offers so much space, and accommodates ample room for families wishing to share a memorable holiday experience. The swimming pool is spectacular offering areas where the youngsters can play, but providing the grownups space to relax and soak up the beautiful French countryside. The village of St Meard de Gurcon has two delightful bakeries along with a recent addition of two Padel Tennis Courts. So close by and so simple to book a court. Nearby towns offer great day and night markets. A magical experience not to be missed. I simply loved staying here and look forward to returning again.
