A Little Bit About Calderdale

Calderdale is the latest media destination in the UK, so much so it has been renamed both Happy Valley and Callywood! The stunning moorland scenery, quirky market towns and historic industrial architecture was clear to see in both 'Last Tango in Halifax' and 'Happy Valley' and in 2019 a new historical drama called 'Gentleman Jack' comes to BBC1, from the same writer, about the life of Anne Lister who lived in centuries old Shibden Hall near Halifax in the early 19th century. Now many of these magnificent buildings have come to life again and Calderdale has a thriving cultural scene. Particularly magnificent is the newly restored Grade 1 listed Piece Hall in central Halifax which is now surrounded by other tourist attractions notably Calderdale Industrial Museum, the Square Chapel, Halifax Minster and Eureka! the National Childrens Interactive Museum. Between Halifax and Sowerby Bridge is the heritage Wainhouse district focussed around Wainhouse Tower, at 77m the tallest folly in the world which opens a few days a year to those able to climb 400 steps to obtain an amazing view of Calderdale and beyond. Calderdale is the perfect location for a holiday if you enjoy history, beautiful scenery, canals, rivers, walking and cycling.
