A Little Bit About Lake Garda

The attraction of the Morainic Hills, near Lake Garda in Northern Italy, is that you can experience the true, unspoilt, tranquil Italy of years gone by with fascinating history, yet be just a 15-minute drive from the Southern shore of Lake Garda which caters well for the tourists in terms of attractions, food and of course the wonderful weather.
Solferino, in the Morainic hills, is the home of the Red Cross which was formed in 1863 by Henri Dunant following the Battle of Solferino in 1859, which led to Italian independence. Cavriana, also nestled in the hills, is a little mediaeval village with ruins of the Gonzaga’s family castle. Bande, Cavriana is listed by UNESCO, being one of the first inhabited settlements in Europe.

Cavriana can transport you back in time for one day when locals dress up in medieval costume for the golden goat palio (capra d’oro), held on the first Saturday of July.
“Le Strade dei Vini e dei Sapori del Garda” (The path of the traditional wines and food) will be appreciated by wine-lovers as there are numerous vineyards for wine-tasting. There are also plenty of trattorias/restaurants where you can sample the local delicacies of the region such as different types of hand-made pasta (e.g. Capunsei and Tortelli di Zucca). There are numerous attractions for all ages in this area. For example, on the Eastern shore of Lake Garda there is GardaLand, the most renowned amusement park in Italy. There is also the aquapark, Canevaworld and Movieland, The Hollywood Park, all appealing to children, teenagers and adventurous adults alike!

There are numerous opportunities to explore the lake by ferry or privately hired boats. Jet skiing, water skiing and wind surfing opportunities are also widely available. Monte Baldo at Malcesine offers paragliding, mountain biking, walking and skiing in the winter. The cities of Mantova, Brescia, Milan, Venice and Verona are all a short drive/train journey away, so easily accessible for a day-trip. Opera lovers will be in their element during the summer Opera season at Verona Arena. Carnival time in Venice is also an experience not to be missed.
