The attraction of the Morainic Hills, near Lake Garda in Northern Italy, is that you can experience the true, unspoilt, tranquil Italy of years gone by with fascinating history, yet be just a 15-minute drive from the Southern shore of Lake Garda which caters well for the tourists in terms of attractions, food and of course the wonderful weather.
Solferino, in the Morainic hills, is the home of the Red Cross which was formed in 1863 by Henri Dunant following the Battle of Solferino in 1859, which led to Italian independence. Cavriana, also nestled in the hills, is a little mediaeval village with ruins of the Gonzaga’s family castle. Bande, Cavriana is listed by UNESCO, being one of the first inhabited settlements in Europe.
Cavriana can transport you back in time for one day when locals dress up in medieval costume for the golden goat palio (capra d’oro), held on the first Saturday of July.
