This is ‘La France Profonde’. Total peace and privacy. Bike rides through the sunflowers, picnics by the lake or in the woods. If you’re feeling more energetic, glorious beaches are within easy reach and historic towns of Saintes and Cognac are about 40 minutes drive. Weekly markets, particularly our local Sunday one an unmissable trip out. Load up with oysters, seafood, melons and local winea d come back for a lazy lunch and a swim.
In the middle of all this our traditional Charentais farmhouse with three large bedrooms, a large walled garden with orchard and pool in a peaceful village surrounded by beautiful countryside. This house is a traditional Charentais farmhouse in its own walled grounds with a pigeonnier - which in other times was part of the farmyard which had stables and little barns in which the family kept its pigs and hens and a cow. Sadly, most of these had gone by the time we arrived, but we were able to use the stone to make a very pretty, large, walled garden which gives access to the pool (9.5 x 4.5 x 1.5 metres). The pool is enclosed in a secret garden of its own with ivy covered walls and palm trees.
The front door, with outside eating area to the left, opens onto a large entrance hall, leading onto a spacious living room on one side and large farmhouse kitchen on the other. The living room houses a grand piano, books, games, television (French only) with DVD player and DVDs, CD player and cds - please feel free to use them. There is a comfy sofa and armchairs, providing an ideal, cool place to withdraw from the outside heat. If it gets cold, there is a large open fireplace. Our large, well-equipped farmhouse kitchen has a refectory table around which the whole family can gather. We have, over the years, amassed a variety of furniture which our guests (and family!) have described as idiosyncratic – but we like it and hope that you do too. From the kitchen, French windows open out onto a terracotta terrace with outdoor furniture for alfresco dining, and lemon and orange trees.
