No 2 Old Coastguards Cottage is a unique waterside retreat, for non-smokers only, that offers magic and charm from the moment the owner, Diana meets you on the pontoon in the lovely village of Newton Ferrers and takes you to the cottage in the rowing boat that is yours for your stay. Also, from March to September there is a ferry which also runs and is another way of accessing the cottage. In winter months and if the weather is absolutely atrocious it is possible to access the cottage by a cliff track and then a walk through a wood.
The cottage is remote in access but has the most fabulous views of the twin villages of Newton Ferrers and Noss Mayo, and a row across the creek brings you to all the attractions of those villages with three pubs, a yacht club and shops for food and wine. What more could you want? It is a perfect place for those with a passion for being on or near the water, and rightfully once earned a position in the Sunday Times 'Top 100 Destinations' due to its truly spectacular setting.
No. 2 is one of a small row of pretty white cottages perched on the waters edge on the River Yealm, just before its beauty spills out into the ocean further around at the creek mouth. It overlooks the yachting havens of Newton Ferrers and Noss Mayo, a hive of water-based activity where you will find three good pubs and shops for newspapers and provisions including a fabulous butchers with deli counter serving great pasties, olives, meat, local cheeses etc - all a short row or walk from the cottage. You can also catch the bus (or drive) to Plymouth which is within easy reach offering a great selection of shops, places for a meal out and attractions including the historic dockyard.
Whilst access by boat may lull you into a sense of isolation, the area actually offers a great deal of things to see and do. Bring your walking boots and explore the South West Coastal Path which runs just a hundred yards from the cottage. This famous coastal walking route offers miles of incredible scenery which will challenge and reward in equal measures with secret beaches and coves to explore enroute. Combe the rock pools when the tide goes out at nearby Wembury beach or surf the waves when the conditions are right and the tide is high. For those who can tear themselves away from the beauty and tranquility of this idyllic setting, you also have the stunning South Hams on the doorstep and Dartmoor National Park within easy reach.
Bring your own boat, canoe or kayak and enjoy messing around on the water from dawn until dusk. Try your luck at crabbing from the quay steps at the front of the cottage or simply sit back and enjoy a slower pace of life sipping a glass of wine on the terrace watching the antics on the water.
When dusk falls, the cottage is every bit as inviting with its coastal theme as the waterside setting outside. Rustle up a seafood supper for everyone in the well equipped kitchen then chat about the days adventures whist you eat it in front of the fire in the dining room. There is also a log burner in the sitting room to relax in front of once you retire with your favourite tipple. No television reception only adds to the charm of the holiday and provides the perfect excuse to enjoy chatting, playing old fashioned games, reading books or watching your favourite movie (TV and DVD provided and there is also internet with unlimited access) in front of the flickering flames.
Wake up in the morning fully refreshed and ready for the next days adventures with the water beckoning from the moment you open the curtains (both the king and twin bedrooms have views over the river). And once you have enjoyed breakfast on the terrace, the days adventures can begin all over again! Moorings are available so bring your own boat, or kayaks or paddle boards.

This was our second time staying in one of coastguards cottages and hopefully it won't be the last. We arrived in rain but it didn't dampen our spirits. We had a fantastic, relaxed family holiday. Cottage is large enough to not feel on top of one another and is clean and has plenty of utensils. Diana's introduction to rowing across the river was invaluable and also the information provided in the cottage regarding maps and tide times came in handy. Her knowledge and love of the area is apparent. Plenty of places to eat locally, favourites were The Dolphin and The Odd Wheel
Amazing and dreamlike fortnight again.
By Margolis From London on 15-Aug-2019
Once again we had the most amazing and dreamlike fortnight at the cottage. It really is the most magical location. One can spend all day sitting in the garden watching the activity on the sun-kissed transparent water and listening to birds of prey hovering above. We can't image a nicer location for that peace of mind and privacy. We highly recommend this holiday resort as a winner.
Exceeded all expectations
By Carolyn From Putney on 01-Jul-2019
This cottage looked so beautiful that I hardly dared believe it wouldn't disappoint. It actually exceeded all expectation and we just loved it. Its much bigger than we expected, both the downstairs space and the bedrooms and beautifully equipped and furnished (note no washing machine tho). And the views are simply unbelievable both from the terrace and on the nearby walks. Diana is a superb host and gives you all the information you need (and you will need it if you are newish to rowing) so that you can have a wonderful waterside holiday. What an incredible place!

This was our 3rd year returning to No.2 and it never fails to dissapoint! Incredible location which far exceeds any photograph or description. Diana's obvious passion for both the area and hospitality towards her guests never ceases to amaze me. It feels like a home from home and we cant wait till next year. Huge thank you from all of us to Diana and family!

This the most amazing cottage. 3 large bedrooms and plenty of living space and all the facilities that you would want. a stunning view of the estuary and once it has been mastered, the rowing boat is your friend. a warm welcome on arrival and a full briefing on the cottage and the surrounding area. this area is still a relatively unspoilt little jewel and we will definitely be back. You will rarely find such a special cottage, especially when the sun is shining.

Fantastic Holiday. Swallows and Amazons.
By Dave From Glocester on 01-Oct-2018
Fantastic holiday in a beautiful location, a real "Swallows and Amazons" adventure! Met by Diana who gave us lots of very useful and essential information about the cottage and use of the rowing boat. Really unique experience - great to get away from it all. Ideal for kayaking and coast walking - fully recommend.
Best summer holiday ever.!
By Lazer And Perla From London on 01-Aug-2018
Our 2 week stay at the cottage was absolutely the best summer holiday experience ever! What a magical place to be at, away from the crowds and cars. You can spend all day lounging on the patio watching all the action on the water. Pure bliss! Keith & Diana make you feel so welcome and are always available for help and advice with the utmost care and love. A highly recommended spot!

As grandad parents, we have taken the whole family on two occasions. The grandchildren, parents and ourselves love the place. We take kayaks and also use the rowing boat to go out on adventures using the tide to give us a free ride. We picnic as the tide changes and get a free ride home. The water is crystal clear, your can see the small fish, mullet and crabs and the flowing weed makes a perfect underwater garden. Row to the pub and back. Perfect week. Try it.
Away from it all
By Conrad From London on 01-Apr-2018
Fantastic place away from it all and spotlessly clean - we visited in an unusually cold April and enjoyed log fires and sunny days, rowed to the pub and walked over the back with the kids to Wembury Beach. We also got to Mothecombe beach which was amazing with really good food at the Schoolhouse cafe. A great base for sailing our boat and kayaking up the creek with a number of paddles. Storage for the trailer up on the hill and excellent training for rowing in a straight line whatever the tide was up to. 50 crabs caught which was definitely the highlight for the kids.
A great escape
By Nick From Exeter on 01-Oct-2017
No.2 Old Coastguards redefines the concept of escape. As soon as you step into the rowing boat (after a lesson given by the owner) an adventure begins, one which allows you to explore the waters, beaches and coastline around the cottage without coming across a single car. The cottage is immaculately clean and tastefully decorated, with a home from home feel (we were greeted with a pile of freshly baked scones and a bottle of wine). The kitchen is well equipped and there was plenty of hot water and logs to burn - very organised and friendly hosts! Simply breathtaking. Thank you Diana and Keith.
