Imposing, large, high-ceilinged, airy, recently converted old farmhouse in 120 acres of private land, mainly olive groves and wild cork oak forest, with stunning views. 12 metre swimming pool for your personal use, not overlooked. House sleeps 8+ in 4 bedrooms, 3 en suite. Traditionally furnished. Wild and natural countryside, 15 minutes' pleasant drive to Odemira with all its facilities, 40 minutes' drive to the fantastic Atlantic beaches. The entire west coast here is a nature reserve. Ideal family holiday location, suit children of all ages. Pets welcome. Wonderful walks, bird watching (ask for list!), horse riding, kayaking, fishing nearby, wide terraces for sunbathing, relaxing and enjoying the views, dramatic arid garden.

The rural location of Chaparral de Cabanas offers much for those seeking peace and quiet. You could spend the whole holiday at the property, just venturing out for supplies, or use it as a base from which to explore the local towns and villages or more distant cities.

Reliable Internet signal from own satellite dish, wifi.

The terraces are great for eating out in the fresh air while enjoying the views of the surrounding countryside. One terrace overlooks the pool so an eye can be kept on the children while they are splashing about. There are lots of shady trees if it gets too hot, and, due to its thick walls, the interior of the house is usually 10 degrees cooler than outside. We have a small fenced lake with fish and sometimes ducks, lovely for a picnic or a quiet read.

Special interest holidays:
Ideal for country walks and bird watching, cycling, painting. Boating and fishing on Santa Clara lake, 30 minutes' drive. Kayaking on River Mira.

Coast/Beach:
40 minutes' drive to stunning Atlantic beaches, many to choose from, all family friendly, some with dramatic cliffs, others with gently sloping sand.

Travel:
Car essential. Nearest airport is Faro, 2 hours' easy drive. Lisbon Airport is 3 hours' drive. Nearest train station, Santa Clara: comfortable air-conditioned efficient trains to Lisbon and Faro, about 35 mins' drive. Lisbon 2 hours, Faro about 90 minutes. Bus and coach station in centre of Odemira.

Distances:
Nearest town is Odemira (pop. 25,000), about 15 minutes' drive. Restaurants, banks, cash points, filling stations, library, 24/7 health care centre (with helipad!), shops, cinema, cafes and supermarkets.

Further Details:
Several traditional local markets in neighbouring villages, see info book at property for details. The huge Santa Clara lake is about half an hour away, great for fishing (huge carp!), motor boating, swimming. Also Kayaking on River Mira, leave from Odemira.

We bought the property about 10 years ago. We loved the farmhouse itself, it's big and spacious, and of course the views. You can see for 40-odd miles down to the south, to the Monchique Hills. Chaparral is close enough to the sea to be able to spend a day or half day on the beach, but not so close that it's always windy, a disadvantage with many coastal properties.
The house itself is just down from a hill top, so it has the amazing views, but also privacy as it's shielded by trees. The drive from Odemira follows the course of the River Mira, along a clear and pretty track. It's about 15 minutes.
It's extremely quiet with no traffic/plane noise, and no pollution, though the constant calling of the Cuckoos does drive you a bit mad in the spring! In fact it's a birdwatcher's paradise with over 50 species recorded at, or near, the property.

Dream Space

By Pat Stocker on 29-Sep-2017

I wanted to write to you just to let you know how much we all enjoyed being at Chaparral, how very comfortable the house and pool were and how much we all admired what you had achieved in creating this paradise.

We loved your garden and we had breakfast every morning at the big table on the terrace, soaking up the views all around. And the pool was perfect. The whole place feels calm - a truly good place to be. I found myself using adjectives like 'magical' to friends about the house and the environment. So beautiful! A place to write, to read, maybe to paint.

Your ‘house book’ was very helpful and everything worked perfectly. I found it interesting living in a solar-powered house and I know that we were all conscious that it forced us to think about turning lights off etc.! Maybe a good lesson to bring home.

One day Dick and I would love to return.

Anyway, thank you for creating such a dream space!

All the very best,
Pat

Perfect Relaxing Destination...

By R. Rolfe on 23-Sep-2017

Communication with Martin (the owner) was excellent, and he was always on hand and eager to help, not just during the booking process, but also throughout our stay. When we arrived at the house, Joao, the housekeeper, was incredibly helpful and friendly. He came most days to check the pool, but was always very discreet. It was always a real pleasure to see him and have a chat.

The unpaved track to Chaparral de Cabanas took just over 20 minutes in our 9-seater minibus, which convinced us to do the trip out no more than once per day, but the upside to this was the beautiful peace and isolation of the house. some days we wouldn’t see a single person or vehicle, which made the holiday truly relaxing, and of course totally free of traffic noise.

The house itself was fantastic. The kitchen/dining room was big and airy, and the kitchen was well equipped. The bedrooms were spacious and three had en-suite bathrooms.

Outside was amazing. The huge patio made a perfect dining area, with an excellent brick barbecue, big dining table and plenty of seating. The pool was just wonderful, particularly for the children, and we all spent many hours swimming and relaxing around it. It was great in the evening, being able to lie on our backs on the patio, looking up at the (very clear) Milky Way. If you happen to have a telescope, be sure to take it!

Overall, Chaparral de Cabanas was the perfect relaxing destination for our party of seven, and we thoroughly enjoyed our two week stay. Would we return? Most definitely!

Rosemary
Stay: 25th July - 9th August 2017.

Wonderful Stay

By Ariella & Family on 13-Sep-2017

What a wonderful stay we had in Chaparral! We loved every minute of it. The pool was great, the kids enjoyed it and so did we. The silence, the remoteness, the amazing views and the starry nights (incl. milky way!) were very special to us. Thank you for a lovely holiday.
A special thank you goes to the kind, loving and adequate service of Joao (and his family). He was there for whatever we needed and was always so friendly and helpful. We would love to come back one day. We heard that you are now enjoying your house. Hope we left it well for you. Thanks again for your hospitality.

Getting Away From It All

By Neil Bage on 13-Sep-2017

Excellent secluded location, ideal place to get away from it all.....looking out over the good sized, warm pool not another building is in sight! Stock up at the Odemira InterMarche and there's no need to move from Chaparral. Great walks in the area, but let the heat drop a little from the mid-afternoon peak.

The villa itself is very well laid out and of a good size in all rooms. It is comprehensively equipped, with everything you will need. (A bonus is the lack of television which is a perfect excuse for catching upon all the books you mean to read!)

We may well take you up on your returnee discount, oh, and please mention us to Joao, who was very helpful, and tell him his English is far better than our Portuguese!

Cheers,

Neil & Lissa

A Fabulous Time At Chaparral

By Don P. on 20-Jul-2017

We had a fabulous time at Chaparral. Joao was very helpful and not at all obtrusive.
If any negatives they were very minor; the road in was a bit daunting at first but we soon got used to it and really appreciated the peace and solitude at the house which was very comfortable; we had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. We enjoyed the pool so much. João brought us a French Press to make coffee early in our stay after realizing that we aren't used to espresso size cups. It was very thoughtful and much appreciated.
We walked to the abandoned Farmhouse seen from Chaparral and enjoyed exploring the property. We made day trips to the coast and had a wonderful dinner near Zambujeira and also a couple of very nice dinners in Odemira in the small park. One day we drove to Evora. Getting back to our pool was a real treat.
You must be proud of what you have done at Chaparral and we really appreciate the opportunity to stay there for a week. We wish we could have stayed longer as the week passed far too quickly.
When we return home I plan to send a few photos of the beautiful mist photographed at sunrise on a couple of mornings.
Regards, Don

Brilliant Place For A Seriously Relaxing Holiday

By Mike And Heather Hull on 08-Oct-2016

We loved Chaparral de Cabanas. The house was well equipped and as described in the listing. Martin was very pleasant to deal with and provided comprehensive info on the house and directions to find it. We loved the peace, quiet and wonderful views. Having stocked up on food and drink in Odemira, we were happy to stay put for three days at a time enjoying the solitude the place offers. At night we lay on the warm tiles of the pool house roof to star gaze and see the Milky Way, a real treat.
We were very grateful for the shading over the pool area as it made lying out far more comfortable. We also enjoyed having breakfast under the olive tree when the air was cool and fresh before the sun gained full strength. A big thumbs up for the fly screens on the doors and windows to keep the mozzies at bay. We enjoyed three trips to various beaches on the west coast, all were different from each other but all offered beautiful sand and surf, with hardly anyone on them.
We would definitely consider returning, highly recommended for anyone wanting a seriously chilled holiday!

My Response
That's so kind! Thanks so much for the great review and we look forward to seeing you again, next year?
All best,
Martin

Earthly Paradise!

By Jane Pearce on 08-Jul-2016

Once you get to the end of the track and arrive at this gorgeous house you never want to stir again! We rapidly realized that the best plan was to stock up at the Intermarche and hole up for a few days. The views, the wildlife, the daily visit by the goats, the pool, the stars, the walks mean you are never bored.
Of course when you fancy a change of scenery there are some lovely beaches nearby which are all different and charming in their own way. The house is well equipped with a great kitchen that is a pleasure to cook in. You can eat all your meals on the terrace looking at the view of the hills beyond.
Really loved it and we are going back next year.

My Response
Thank you so much for such a lovely review, and we look forward to welcoming you back next year.

Loved It, Didn't Want To Leave

By Frances D. on 08-Jul-2016

Three generations of us landed at Chaparral, to a retreat both stunning and peaceful. We all loved it, spent many hours on the terrace bbq'ing and enjoyed the peace and quiet of rolling hills and free range cows and goats.
For a change of scenery the beaches are close by, offering kayaking and other adventure activities (my children are 16 & 19) but staying in and walking through the land is pleasurable also.

We didn't want to leave and are also making plans to go back again next year.

Wonderful Villa, Stunning Views

By Amie Offer on 23-Jun-2016

My husband and I stayed here recently, we wanted to get away from it all, and this villa was just the ticket. The villa was just as described. It had everything that you could need for your stay. The pool is great, big enough to actually swim, and ideal for a quick dip when you get too hot. The villa, was very clean and well maintained.

There are good supermarkets near by, where you can get all that you need, and some lovely cafés in the local town Odemira. Martin, the owner was very helpful all the way up to, and during our stay, making it stress free.

I would highly recommend staying here, I'm sure we will again.
My Response

Thank you so much Amie for your kind remarks. Welcome back any time! Martin

A Real Holiday In Nature

By Antje Derks on 22-Sep-2015

My partner and I both love nature, so this stunning Farmhouse was an ideal location for a proper holiday with complete peace and quiet. The owners comprehensive directions ensured we had a smooth journey from the airport to the property. We were struck by the tasteful, yet authentic decoration and the yummy wine and biscuits left as a welcome. The property was spotless and the views are absolutely breathtaking.
April is a wonderful time of year for wild flowers - we had some wonderful walks in the surrounding landscapes. The pool was clean and warm - ideal for a dip and a real winner if you have kids and it is hot. The nearby town has lots of places to eat, but the kitchen is so well equipped, we found ourselves buying fresh produce and eating on the terrace in the evening.

My partner and I did not want to leave and are already planning our return. I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending this beautiful property. Recommended for: Families with Young Children, Sightseeing, Adventure Seekers, Romantic Getaway, Families with Teenagers.

We Love This Place!

By Mike And Bex on 23-Sep-2014

We had such a great time here. The property was perfect for us and our 3 children (10, 8 & 5). We loved the peace and quiet, being able to go for long runs in unspoiled landscape, swimming in the pool and relaxing on the terrace with a cold beer!

What is also noteworthy is that there are so many beaches to choose from, if you like going to the seaside. We tried about 5, and were amazed. They were never busy, and once we got the lie of the land, we were able to choose from crashing waves, acres of sand, rock pools, aquamarine water, river estuary or often a good mixture. Not to mention some very nice fish restaurants, and the amazing Chinese shop in Odemira, where you can buy almost anything!

We will certainly be coming back. the weather never disappoints, and neither did Chaparral.Recommended for: Families with Young Children, Pet-friendly, Sightseeing, Families with Teenagers.

My Response
Thanks for such a lovely review (you mean 2014 of course!), and happy to hear how much you enjoyed your stay. Welcome back any time!

A Wonderful Retreat

By Mike D. on 12-Jul-2014

Had a fabulous stay here last summer for 10 days with my two young kids (now 8 and 10). Accommodation was terrific - large, spacious, cool in the heat of the day.

The topography is fascinating and varied - plenty of interesting walks up and down the nearby hills. Wonderful and private. Pool was a big highlight, hours of fun, and with stunning views. Plenty of great stuff to do away from the house.

Looking forward to a return visit, kids desperate to go back.Recommended for: Families with Young Children, Age 55+, Families with Teenagers.
