The High Barn looks S.W. over mountain slopes forested with sweet chestnut and beech. Villages nestle between the trees. There is a sense of profound peace. A few steps inside the front door and you find yourself on the roof terrace with a breathtaking panorama stretching before you. You waken to the dawn chorus and watch the sun go down to the evening one.
Villa Simonicchi is the home of an artist and has been specially created to provide a place of relaxation and renewal. It is on three levels. The High Barn uses the entire length of the top floor. It is bright, airy, relaxing, full of original paintings and sculpture, and furnished with everything needed for a simple country life. The two bedroom suites are separated by the sitting room and dining /kitchen, so that within the apartment there are areas of complete privacy.
The sitting room holds a small library, with armchairs and sofas to seat 8. In the living kitchen which is fully equipped, the dining table extends to seat 6 or more.
There is private parking space.
For many the roof terrace is a favourite space for lazing in the sunshine, dining, watching falling stars. There is a big reflector telescope - the full moon is spectacular. Below, a flower garden with fruit trees, olives and lavender drops down in terraces towards the valley.
The barn once held the village grain in the times when all the valley was sown with corn.
The sheaves were brought up on ox carts under the farmhouse arch to a large stone paved area in front of the barn, and everyone joined in the threshing.
The grain was kept on the top floor with angled brick windows on the valley side for the air to circulate. Oxen and plough horses shared the stalls beneath.
In 1987, despite it being condemned, it was still untouched and magical. Now, although the interior is restructured, the long galleries and changes of level keep it in harmony with the landscape.
