Detached house with private pools in the unspoilt, totally non commercialised, green & mountainous Garfagnana region of north Tuscany. The views from the house & pool are fantastic, and the grounds, with their own orchards a perfect place to relax.
The property is beautifully, newly renovated, with sleeping accommodation/shower-rooms are split over 2 floors - an ideal choice for 2 families.
There is a large well equipped farmhouse style kitchen with eating area with , dishwasher, oven, hob, fridge/freezer, and a living room with two comfy sofas, open fire and satellite TV. WIFI.
In the basement there is a separate laundry area, and also a further dining room for eating at a cool temperature when it is too hot outside.
Outside there are 2 terraces, BBQ private pool and large garden.
The grounds are beautiful, mature, and well kept, with lots of flowers and colour, with a pretty orchard adjacent. Out to the front are beautiful lush views of the Appenine mountain range....
The area is dominated by the hills and mountains surrounding the valley, and there are hill top villages in abundance awaiting your exploration, as well as the local Natural Parks.
This is the 'real' Italy.
The house is situated at the end of a private lane, a 2 minute drive from the mountain village of Poggio, which itself is located circa 10/15 minutes from local market town of Castelnuovo - less than 1 hour north of Lucca.
The area is ideal for a totally relaxing holiday in the countryside with fantastic views at every turn whatever the time of year. Explore the hundreds of hill-top villages, go walking/horse riding/fishing, or fr a bike ride. Relax with a glass of wine and watch locals play Bocce, or spectate at the cheese rolling for which the area is famous! In the autumn join in the local passion of mushroom picking, or feast on chestnuts roasted on your fire!
Tourism is yet to hit this area, and this is truly one of those increasingly rare places in Europe where you can experience the real way of life of the locals.
That said there are plenty of options for days out and many suggestions are detailed under the ' location section' of this advert.
Go on, treat yourself to a fantastic property!
Cuisine: Garfagnanan cuisine is fairly simple, but scrumptious, using local fresh produce to prepare dishes, which since they are prepared in the main for the locals are very cheap!
The local wine is good, and also extremely inexpensive.
Plenty of places to picnic in seclusion, with provisions easily found in local bars/shops as well as the occasional supermarket.
Locals: The locals are very friendly and helpful.
A little about location:
This is the 'real' Italy, and due to fact this area is not touristy it is very cheap for eating out, and trying local cuisine. Pisa Airport is 90 min.; Florence 2 hr.; Genoa 2.5hr. All this peace and yet only a short drive from villages, and one can even walk down to the river. There is a train station in the village, for easy exploring and in Camporgiano 4.5km away you will find basic shops/supermarket/bars/restaurants and a privately owned castle. The property is located a 10 minute drive from the market town of Castelnuovo and 25 mins from the mediaeval town of Barga both with their various bars and restaurants. Pisa 90 mins; Lucca 1 hr Florence 1 hour 50 mins; mediaeval villages everywhere; National Parks 20 mins. Closer to home there are plenty of little historic villages to visit, many of which have local festas in the summer. There are also the lakes of Gramalazzo, Vagli (with its hidden village submerged by the water) and Pontecosi, and some guests love to swim in the river. The house is also ideally located for visiting the local Fortress at Verrucole which is a good afternoon out, with stunning views and some interactive activities for the children. Also close by is the Buffardello tree climbing and zip wire park (ideal for both adults and children of all ages with a variety of runs) where one can take a picnic and spend the entire day in the welcome shade of the forest. The real beauty of this area is the dramatic mountain scenery, and the hundreds of hilltop villages to explore, endless picnicking opportunities, and the pure peace of a non touristy holiday ...... There are plenty of dining options and your kitchen is well equipped for evenings dining al fresco at home.
A little gem

Gorgeous place. Clean, with all the amenities needed and very private. The owners brough a crate of fresh veg and herbs which was lovely. We managed to use it all up. An amazing place
My favourite place in Italy

We will be staying for 3 weeks in April - but it will be our 4th trip there. The owners, Iliario and Maria, are so friendly and helpful. It is a true Agritursimo - You have to provide all your food and toiletries and make your own bed. The house is clean and comfortable. Groceries are easily purchased at CONAD in Castelnuovo - about 20 min away. There is a washer, but no dryer. So peaceful to watch the little train go 'toot toot' over the bridge; listen to the Cuckoo bird; the pealing of the church bells; the voices of the farmers. There is a Market Day every Thursday in Castelnuovo. Lucca, Florence, Pisa are each about 1 hr away.
**TR response: Just to advise future guests that there are shopping facilities in Camporgiano too which is less than a 5minute drive away.

Great place to visit. Loved the area. Loved going to Market Day in Castelnuovo every Thursday. Loved eating gelato. Enjoyed going to CONAD in Castelnuovo and Gallicano - riding the escalator up and down and the variety of fresh produce and meats. The owners, Ilario and Maria made our stay welcoming and enjoyable.

We stayed for 2 weeks this summer. The house was as described, even better. Especially the outside areas. There is a pizza oven which isn't on the description which was brilliant fun for the kids to make their own pizzas and cook outdoors! The pool and surrounding area are brilliant. The house was very clean and we were brought a change of bedding half way through the stay. The owner was lovely and very helpful and keeps the garden to a very high standard. I would definitely recommend this property to others. It is in the countryside and rural so lovely and peaceful and quiet. We could really relax and enjoy the real Tuscany.
“Ideal place for rest, relaxation and fun.”

The house is accessed down a short track with parking outside main gate on a steep hill, so I suggest you drive in forwards and reverse out but make sure you have a good handbrake and no low profile tyres. Hosts are extremely friendly and helpful.
The house is so pretty with many outdoor seating areas. The overhead grape canopy over the outside dining table is so pretty. Magnificent views from the Infinity pool. Fun to be had with the wood barbeque and the best night was making pizzas in the pizza oven.
The house is cool but amply warmed by the wood burning fire in the cooler evenings. Well laid out house especially for 2 families of 4 with large double, 1 twin and a bathroom on each floor. Watch out for the occasional scorpion.
Photos don't do full justice too this place.
Do note that if you see a scorpion they are very shy and will not hurt you. They will only sting if you tread on one and then it is less than a wasp sting. Harmless European scorpions - their scariness is in their look and not their sting!
Peace and quiet.

We had a very nice time. The children enjoyed the pool and the adults enjoyed walking and travelling around an area that feels unspoilt. There are interesting sights locally and others within easy reach by local train or car (we went to Lucca, Pisa and Florence during our stay). The property and its surrounds are beautifully and lovingly kept by the owner, and I would certainly recommend for those who like peace, quiet and the chance to explore.
New Year 2013/14

The atmosphere is very welcoming, the house very well furnished with everything necessary and perfect for our needs. We had great fun with the wood oven perparing pizzas, not even the cold stopped us! A big thank you to Ilario for his hospitality and kindness. We will always remember our New Year at Caprifoglio.
Beautiful setting with panoramic views across the valley. .

Accomodation was comfortable and the outside spaces were great.Description of the facilities was pretty accurate.THe property was spotlessly clean and Bruno ,the owner, very helpful.we have been to this area 3 times now and the property compared very well with the others we have stayed in.
A car is essential and there are no restaurants within walking distance. The Garfagnana is reasonably remote but the train down the valley takes about an hour down to lucca ,where you can connect to Florence,Pisa or the coastal resorts. The trains are very cheap compared to home. If you are dining out,do not miss a night at IL Pozzo at Pieve Fosciana. If you are brave enough, try a trip to the coast over the Apuan alps, the views are breathtaking. A trip to Barga is always worthwhile and there are several good restaurants in the old town. One small criticism is that the welcome information is all in Italian and a multilingual version might be more helpful. As always when we visit the garfagnana ,we don't want to leave !
**TR response - we do forward a full local information pack in English to all guests prior to arrival, and we are on 24 hour call if needed. We will speak to the owner to see if he needs assistance with providing English information in the house itself.

We had a perfect week in this amazing house. The view, food, the people are all small pieces in the puzzle of perfect relaxation, a happy and wonderful vacation.

We had a tremendous week with various weather. We have enjoyed the nice garden and pool very much. The house was also very nice and the friendliness of the host made it easy to enjoy the stay here. During the week we made many short trips to the wonderful cities and villages like Lucca, Barga, Castiglione and of course Castelnuovo. We had BBQs everyday and also tried the pizza oven as well.

We had a lovely holiday. We loved the food (especially the pizzeria Il Centro in Castelnuovo), the wine and the lovely swimming pool. We went to Lucca, Pisa and the Cinque Terre (its a long trip by car but wonderful to see) you can take a boat trip from La Spezia to all 5 fishing villages. The boys have been to the Ferrari museum in Modena where they drove a Ferrari - a fun thing to do.

We, 2 families from Denmark, had a fantastic week here in the north of Tuscany. 7 days of swimming, playing in the garden, travelling to Lucca and other places by train. Super weather - super place - super holiday!
Very recommended for a family holiday!

We spent two weeks in Villa Caprifoglio last autumn. The house was tidy, garden and swimming pool were well kept and the surroundings was peaceful and the view over the valley very beautiful. We were a group of 5 adults and 3 kids and we all had plenty of room in the house.
