A complete gem of a house in a very welcoming Andalusian mountain village.

The building was originally two old village houses, which we have joined together and converted with much care. It retains the old beams, very thick walls and many other features which are typical of the old houses of this area. The result is a very comfortable and enchanting house in which to stay with a real family feel to it. It will give you the chance to enjoy a relaxing holiday. Two open-plan staircases and the pool mean that the house is not safe for small children.

It is situated in the old (and prettiest) part of the village where the little narrow streets were made to accommodate mules rather than cars. Behind the house is a terraced garden filled with flowers and a lemon tree and with a small swimming pool. From the railings at the end of the garden you look down onto a valley of smallholdings with the Mediterranean in the distance. Inmaculada, our housekeeper, comes every day (except Sundays) to make the beds, empty the bins and sweep the terrace.

Downstairs there is a sitting room with comfortable sofas and a dining room with French windows which open onto an outside eating area. There is also a kitchen and a small double bedroom with its own bathroom. Upstairs there are two double bedrooms (one with a terrace) each with its own bathroom and air conditioning. All the bedrooms have twin beds and the bathrooms have heated towel rails and infra red heaters. In the winter the house keeps wonderfully warm with oil-filled radiators and a wood burning stove.

A two minute walk takes you to the main square of Ojen where there are many shops, tapas bars, restaurants and an excellent market on Saturday mornings.

Above the village the town hall has built an Olympic sized swimming pool, tennis court, state of the art gym and a restaurant with the most spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. It is hard to believe that the coast and the tourists are only 8 kms away, because this is still a traditional Spanish village with a marvellously relaxed way of life. We are on the edge of the Sierra de las Nieves nature park which provides some wonderful walks.

We absolutely adore this house in Ojen. It is an absolute find and we have been many times. The combination of a charming and comfortable house with everything you need, and the lovely garden and pool is ideal. There’s also a wonderful flat roof area which is perfect for yoga. The house is very easy to get to from Malaga airport, which makes for a very relaxing holiday. On our last stay we visited local beaches, ate at very good restaurants and enjoyed the marvellous weather. Highly recommended for families, a group of friends or a couple. We will definitely be back.

Lovely peaceful place

We returned again for Christmas 2019 and it was as charming in winter as it is in summer. The wood-burning stove is powerful enough to heat up the whole house in the evenings and there are radiators everywhere as back-up. There is a very good folder with all the best local replacements listed and so although we were lovely and snug in the hideaway, there was also plenty to do when it stopped raining. I would thoroughly recommend staying here, and will do myself again soon.

The most charming house!

We have stayed in this wonderful house in Ojen every year for longer than I can remember. It is a minute’s walk to the village square and because cars park outside the main village there is no traffic noise. The house keeper comes daily and keeps the house immaculate and the gardener looks after the pool and plants. Ojen is only five miles from Marbella - but could be a million. There’s lots to visit locally including Ronda and many beaches and Ojen itself has everything one needs. As soon as air travel starts again we will be back.

The Gem in Ojen

I have been staying here for 40 years now, and my mum before me. My kids love it too and hope to be able to come for 40 years into the future.

This house is unique, like the village, perched on the side of a mountain. Everything you need is there. You can do everything on foot, and never need to take the car at any point. There are an abundance of restaurants and bars within 100ms, but far enough away that the sounds are not disturbing. There is a fabulous market on a Saturday morning. The surrounding area also has some amazing walks, which we have only started to appreciate as we get older.

In our 20s and 30s we loved to get up and have breakfast and then head out to play tennis up the mountain just as the lovely cleaner arrived so we weren't under her feet. Now we are older exercise tends to be a lengthy mountain walk in the evening, stopping for an aperatif in the village on our way home.

The one thing you need to bring is sensible footwear as the streets are paved and steep.
