CALABRIA; a fascinating fusion of hundreds of miles of stunning coastline. Mountainous hinterland, the imposing Pollino chain in the North, the Sila forested plateau in the Centre and the Serre and Aspromonte chains in the South. The mountains being so near to the sea, the rivers are all very short: called "Fiumare", and they stay dry for long part of the year.

HISTORY:
In 8th century, BC, Calabria became a colony of the Greeks, who founded the cities of Reggio, Calabria, Sibari and Crotone. In the 4th century BC it was occupied by the Bruttii, who during the Punic wars sided with Hannibal against the Romans. In 132 BC it was conquered by the Romans and included in the Third Region as Bruttium, while the name Calabria was used only for the Salento Peninsula (on the east coast).

After the Roman Empire was split into Western and Eastern (with capital Byzanthium), Calabria stayed under the Byzantines until the Lombards occupied it in the 7th century AD. In 885 Byzanthine General Niceforo foca defeated the Lombards and Saracens, recovering the region. Later on, it was conquered by the Normans (1060), then by the Swabians (modern Bavarians), the Anjou (Angevin Kings of England, of French origin ) and the Aragonese (north eastern Spanish. Much of this history is what makes Calabria special from other parts of Italy.

HOME:
Approximately 40 minutes drive from the airport at Lamezia Terme. Sitting high atop the lush slopes of a tall hill, overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. Magnificent views and vantage points. Peaceful, safe. This is a truly friendly neighbourhood, close to amenities and beaches.

YOU WILL NEED AND WANT A VEHICLE IN THIS REGION, due to the mainly hilly regions.

It is possible to drive from West to East in around 1 hour;
Discover hidden villages, like Spilinga - famous for the spicy Nduja (pronounced En-doo-ya) sausage/spreads.
So much natural beauty abounds.
There are many local festivals, almost every month during Spring and Summer.

NEAREST AIRPORT: Lamezia Terme (SUF). Convenienty located by the main Highways and all routes South. Enter highway to Reggio/Rosanno. Take exit Pizzo, and enjoy a scenic coastal drive (outside of high season, if you choose) and fully enjoy the ocean all the way to Zambrone on the SS522 highway.

PROPERTY LOCATION:
Near the small community of Zambrone Superiore, Priscopio. Approx. 250-300 metres above sea level. The West-facing terrace overlooks the Tyrrhenian sea (west coast). It is approx. 700 metres to beaches. A Villetta-style bungalow, in its own private garden (a work in progress). Newly planted fruit trees of orange, lemon, fig, banana, and an olive tree. Flowering herbs. Secure entrance/access/Enterphone to the house. Very safe and friendly community. Located about 10 - 15 drive south to Tropea, and 30 minute or so North to Pizzo. Located 5 minutes from coastal highway, atop Zambrone Hills.

HOME INTERIOR: Extremely light and airy. Plenty of sunlight in the morning!
BEDROOMS: Facing East, with large double windows and screens.
LIVING ROOM: Full double glass doors onto a Terrace overlooking the ocean. Open plan. TV, DVD. Large comfortable wraparound sofa and arm chair. Large ottoman (converts to an extra bed). Expandable dining room table and chairs. Central Air conditioning/Heating
BEDROOMS: Master bedroom -Queen Size bed, bedside tables. Large wardbrobe. Large double windows with adjustable shutters (built-in screens).
BEDROOM 2: Bedside table, 2 single beds./interchange for double. Large wardrobe. Large windows with screens.
BATHROOM: Window - Light and sunny. Shower. Bidet. Toilet. Hair dryer. Water Heater/Boiler (Hot water on-/off switch). Lighted vanity/cupboards.
HALLWAY: Chest drawers containing immediate linen for kitchen. Hair dryers.
TERRACE: Spacious and great for dining 'al fresco'. Relax with a morning coffee/breakfast, or lunch, enjoying the scene.
BEACHES: You may want to visit one or 2 of many beaches in the region; all are a short drive away. A quite, and more private beach, Marinella, can be reached via a nice stroll through the meadow, just behind Zambrone station, near the Welcome sIgn to Zambrone on Hwy SS522.

Located on a small complex of 6 other buildings, which share a semi-private swimming pool. Most owners and visitors tend to prefer daily swims in the ocean. (Few are in residence year round and do not rent out), so the pool is virtually private for guests who wish to use it.

ZAMBRONE SUPIERIORE: (Old Zambrone) up in the hills, is a short drive from the property. Bank, Post office. Pharmacy, Grocery. Great restaurants - Authentic Italian dishes including Pizza (of course). Take away is available.
Excellent, seafood restaurant. All food is Fresh in this region. Fish caught the same morning, often delivered to your door. Local residents are kind, friendly and hospitable. Nearby towns are Tropea, to the south, all within a short driving distance. Pizzo is to the north. Inland, the capital city of Vibo Valentia, with some amazing driving experiences, and many routes. There you will find indoor shopping mall and many other facilities. Again, there arew many places to see and enjoy and not too far to drive.

GETTING THERE: (To be updated)
From UK: Flights via Rome, Pisa or Milan (other European cities) - direct flights from Stansted seem to be staples for cheap flights/carriers.
Canada: (direct flights early in season) from Toronto, or Montreal, via AirTransat, in season) . Alternative is via Rome. (We recommend trying the regular flights down to Lamezia via Alitalia - (Service is excellent - about 1 hour journey).
Many European cities have direct flights and include;
Germany: from Dusseldorf by Ryanair. Direct flights from Berlin (when last checked).
Alternative airlines: Blue & Air One to Milan or Rome to Lamezia.
Cheapest flights - from London, Stansted - Stay overnight at the Radisson Blue Hotel, which is a very short stroll into your airport early a.m.
AT THE AIRPORT:
CAR HIRE: From Lamezia Terme Airport - conveniently located, walking distance, from the arrival hall. The usual companies are Sicily by Car, Hertz, EuroCar, AutoEurope, etc.. A Large selection of rental companies all in one location.

AIRPORT TRANSFERS: From Lamezia Terme, Bus (approx. Euro 0.70) from airport to train Service. Train to Zambrone Marina Euro 4.00

TRAINS: From Rome/Milan to Lamezia, Zambrone and Tropea. As terrain is mountainous in places, some public transportation is sparse and seasonal. Rail travel in Italy is low cost and reliable. (Unless there is a Strike!) Rail routes service the Costa degli Dei (Coast of the Gods) and all destinations south, East and the West coast.

BOOKING/RESERVATIONS:
A 20% Non-refundable Deposit to Secure your reservation at time of booking .
Balance Payment: Due 6 weeks Prior to Date of Arrival.

RENTAL PRICES: Contact Owner for individual pricing, for nightly priced bookings (less than 7 days stay) or Discounts for lengthier stays.
ADDITIONAL FEE: Only one Standard Final Cleaning Fee of Euro 120, to be Paid along with Reservation Deposit.

N.B.: Linen, Gas and electricity, heat and air conditioning: All inclusive in the cost of your rental. (unlike many other places in Italy).

CONTACT: Our Caretaker/Key-holder will meet you at the property at the pre-designated time - Contact information will be provided to you, before you leave home. We need the Approximate Time of your Arrival, to pass on to our caretaker. You must contact them before you leaving, to Return the Keys. YOU MUST NOT LEAVE KEYS INSIDE THE PROPERTY.

KINDLY Respect our Check-in and Check-out times. We are happy to accommodate special requests, where necessary; e.g. late evening arrival (before 9:00 p.m.) We need to know well in advance and check this with keyholder/caretaker.
Should your arrival time change, we ask that, if it is outside the designated meetup time, or our listed Check-in times, we may recommend alternative overnight accommodation.

Should you need assistance, or have questions, we are reachable by email/phone - Should there be an issue that needs attention, please call our contact locally. They can be reached by phone or email.

Remember: BEFORE LEAVING, KEYS MUST BE HANDED OVER and NOT LEFT INSIDE THE PROPERTY. Otherwise, you may be charged an addition fee.

HOUSE RULES:
We ask that you please respect our Rules of house, and ensuring any debris, garbage is disposed of before you leave. Do clean up dirty dishes before you leave. ARRANGE FOR A TIME WHEN THE KEYS CAN BE HANDED BACK OVER TO OUR CARETAKER. KEYS MUST NEVER BE LEFT INSIDE THE PROPERTY.

As a Self-Catering property - You will need to put the following on your shopping list: (N.B. firsts on the list will always be in-house). i.e.:

Garbage/recycling bags.
Laundry detergent.

FEES/CHARGES:
Final Cleaning Fee: Euro 120 payable with Deposit Payment.

GARBAGE/RECYCLING
Coloured Bags for recycling are often left-over items, such as recycling bags. Found under kitchen sink.
CHECK: Colour codes menu regarding Days of type of recycling, rubbish, organic, etc.
Add CODED STICKERS, where necessary - provided by the caretaker.
ALWAYS attach a computer-coded sticker" - otherwise, there will be NO Collection/pick-up.

(Recycling is relatively new program - Coloured bins are available for your day-to-day use on the property. - Please - NEVER LEAVE THESE OUTSIDE OF THE PROPERTY!
LARGER MAIN BINS for bagged items, are at the end of the complex. (If for some reason, you do not see them - Please NEVER LEVEL RUBBISH/GARBAGE lying on the ground anywhere - Simply hang from fence, directly in front of the property.
ON NIGHT BEFORE PICK-UP, (Same Night) rarely, in the early a.m. So, please be punctual.

mooi huisje, wel helemaal bovenop een heuvel aan een zandpad. regelmatig geen stromend water op heel het complex. de douche viel bijna uit elkaar, verder netjes.

Tolle Aussicht!

Wer es ruhig mag, ein Auto hat, kein Remmidemmi wünscht, kein Problem mit einem längeren Anfahrtsweg hat, romantische Sonnenuntergänge liebt, ist hier genau richtig.
Alles war sauber, aufgeräumt; alles hat funktioniert, insbesondere die Klimaanlage (Split-Gerät in der Wohnküche). Gas in der Küche, Waschmaschine in der Abstellkammer. Der Balkon ist groß und bietet einen phantastischen Blick, 290 Meter über dem Meer. Wenn man sich auf einen Stuhl stellt, kann man über die Mauer des Nachbarn weiter westlich am Horizont den Stromboli sehen.
Wenn es einen Makel gibt: Die ausgebaute Straße endet ungefähr 75 Meter vor dem Objekt. Dann muss man über eine Schotterpiste mit Erosionsrinnen fahren. Weil ich einen Mietwagen hatte, war es mir aber nicht so wichtig.

Excellent accommodation in a great location. The house has everything you need + superb views.

We spent 6 weeks in Patricia's wonderful apartment.
The accommodation is spacious and clean with superb views from the spacious verandah. There is even a pool for local residents.
Patricia is an excellent host and communication was no problem.
The caretaker Francesco is an absolute marvel. Nothing was too much trouble and he often brought us fresh fruit and vegies from his garden.
The village of Zambrone is great starting point for exploring the many wonders of Calabria. The beaches in and around Zambrone are beautiful and plentiful.
The small village of Zambrone has a wonderful pizzeria as well as a seafood restaraunt. But we enjoyed cooking many meals at home from the ingredients we bought from local markets.
The community of Zambrone is very welcoming and friendly.
All in all we would thoroughly recommend Zambrone and in particular Patricia's apartment.
A car is highly recommended to be able to enjoy the abundant nearby attractions.
