Description

Set in a peaceful and tranquil position, but less than an hours drive from the airport at La Rochelle or 1hr15 from Bordeaux, this gite is in the grounds of an historic chateau.

Built of stone the accommodation stays cool in the summer and is very cosy in the winter having the benefit of a log burner in the lounge, radiators in the main rooms and underfloor heating in the bathroom. The gite is very spacious, 75m2, and sleeps 2 people . There is a large double bedroom( with room for an extra full size single bed for a child or if two friends would like to stay), a fully equipped kitchen and beautiful vaulted living room. There is also a modern bathroom with large shower cubicle and double basin. You can enjoy a private terrace and also have sole use of the large walled garden.

There are walking routes close by, an equestrian centre within walking distance and a golf course a 5 minute drive away. We have bicycles which can be used to go slightly further afield, maybe to visit the famous stone carvings at Port d'envaux, where it is also a popular spot for river swimming and the hire of kayaks and small boats. We are close to the Roman town of Saintes with historic sites, including the Roman ampitheatre, Arc germanicus, Abbaye au Dames and the Cathedral of St Pierre. The old town and the river are very picturesque with an abundance of bars, restaurants and shops. There is even a small animal enclosure in the town park which has music events in the summer and a christmas market every year.

We live and work at the chateau and enjoy working in the grounds and vegetable garden. We have two miniature sheep and free range hens, which keep us and our guests supplied with eggs (subject to availability!).Within 40 minutes you can reach the main beach at Royan, with many other smaller beaches along the coast line. La Rochelle with its picturesque port and airport is 1 hr away. There are many lovely villages to visit close by and a huge choice of chateaux open to the public. There are plenty of walks around our local area through sunflower, corn fields and woods.

If you are coming by car we are only 10 mins from the A10.

Fabulous stay

By Sue on 05-Jun-2025

This was our first experience of staying in a gîte in the French countryside and i was slightly nervous about what we would find but i needn’t have worried. The property was very spacious and quiet , the only sounds being birdsong and the munching of the two sheep. All the rooms are beautifully furnished, largely with traditional French pieces including a huge wardrobe. The bed was comfortable, the shower effective and the towels a good size. The kitchen is very well equipped and we eat many of our meals in the private garden. The host was friendly and available on site most of the time to answer questions. There is a small supermarket in a neighbouring village but the town of Saintes is about 20 minutes drive and has two big supermarkets and plenty of smaller shops. We would certainly consider going back there.

It was a great place to stay, unfortunately I was there for work so I didn’t see much around!

Great!

Susanne and Sando are very friendly, discreet but responsive hosts. The castle is beautiful. The cottage is newly renovated, very spacious, very comfortable. We enjoyed the calm of the park and being able to enjoy it with our own garden/terrace. the area around is full of possible tours. We will come back. Only downside, a smell of humidity a little strong in the cottage and chickens a little invasive at first :-)
