Situated in the small hamlet of Le Haut Fresnay, some 8 miles from DOMFRONT in southern Normandy, La Fermette is a stone-built, former farmhouse standing in extensive grounds, shared with helpful British owners. There are ponds and a stream, lawns and mature trees, and wildlife everywhere. You can see red squirrels, and birds of prey, and if you are lucky: hares, deer and even (rarely) wild boar! The peace and quiet is almost tangible. Our local village, Lore, with its small supermarket, is within walking distance. Ceauce, a small market town with a range of shops, a bank and a small weekly market, is a couple of miles away, and just to the north is Domfront, a mediaeval market town with a fine church and a castle. Also nearby you will find Lassay les Chateaux, with its picturesque castle, lake and rose garden. Bagnoles de l'Orne, about 15 miles away, is a spa resort set around a lake with a casino, many restaurants and smart shops. There is plenty to do in the local area, and information is provided in the cottage. Further afield, Mont St Michel, the D-Day landing beaches and some sandy seaside beaches are all easily accessible. Le Mans and some of the northernmost Loire Chateaux are within reach. Even Paris and Monet's garden at Giverny, are manageable in a (longish) day trip.

La Fermette is available for a maximum of 6 people (plus a baby). With 3 bedrooms and 2 shower rooms, the cottage is an ideal holiday property for 2 couples, or a family holiday. The ground floor consists of a large open plan area comprising the living room, dining area and kitchen. The cottage has electric central heating and there is also a wood burning stove.

In the living room, there is a sofa, comfortable chairs and coffee tables. The room is well lit by overhead lights, a standard lamp and table lamps, The large woodburning stove is set into a feature fireplace. The beamed ceiling completes the rustic charm of the room. A flat screen TV offers British satellite television and radio channels. A DVD player, board games and a collection of books complete the indoor entertainment.
The dining area has a table and six chairs with an overhead lamp. The huge oak sideboard has a carved door.
The rear window overlooks a patio and a meadow beyond, where cows are normally grazing.
The front window overlooks a small front garden, fenced and gated, to provide safety for small children.

The kitchen, with oak units, has an electric oven with ceramic hob, a washing machine, dishwasher, microwave oven, electric kettle and a 2-door fridge/freezer. It is well provided with cooking equipment. and there is plenty of matching crockery, cutlery and glassware.

Off the back hall, which also gives access to the garden and the stairs, is a shower room with hand basin and a separate wc.

Upstairs, off the spacious landing with its’ stair gate, there are three prettily furnished bedrooms, two with double beds and one with twin beds. All the bedrooms have wardrobes, mirrors, chests of drawers and/or dressing tables. Each bed has a bedside table with a reading lamp. All the rooms have electric heaters which can be controlled centrally if you wish.
The house bathroom is also off the landing and is accessible from all three bedrooms. It has a shower, hand basin and WC.
.A cot is available on request. All linen and towels are included in the rent, with the exception of cot linen.
Wireless internet access is available.

Outside, at the front of the house is a small fenced and gated courtyard garden, safe for small children. A garden table and chairs make it a delightful place to have breakfast on a sunny morning. At the back of the house is a patio with garden furniture and a barbecue. This is your private place to eat outside, or just to sit with a glass of wine, enjoying the birdsong and any passing wildlife. The rest of the grounds are yours to enjoy as well, and there are several places to sit and relax. Or take your own garden chairs and sit where you wish. There is a picnic table too, in the valley, close to the "bug hotel" - another place for a meal outdoors perhaps, after a stroll through the valley and around the wildflower meadow .

La Fermette

By Philippe F on 17-Aug-2020

Nigel et Paula sont très charmants et très discrets. Nous avons passé dans leur gîte un agréble séjour. L'endroit est retiré de la circulation, très verdoyant et très calme, l'idéal pour se reposer. Les commerces sont proches.

Our stay in Le Fournil .

By Jenny, Steve And Jessica on 17-Aug-2019

This has been our second visit to Le Haut Fresnay. Last year, we stayed in La Fermette, but as a family of 3 it was quite big, and we have found Le Fournil to be a brilliant size for us. We especially like the bread oven with the light in it. Everything about this house is great, everything you need for a holiday, We have visited Chateaux at Carrouges, Mayenne and Falaise, and they have all been brilliant, especially if you are a history buff! The weather has not been kind to us this week so we have not enjoyed the beach at La Ferte Mace as much as we would have liked. Our 4-year old loves it, and if you have a good weather it is a great place to spend time. The cafe is pretty reasonable; we had 'moules et frites', which were lovely and 11 Euros. Other places we have enjoyed are St Frambault ( a brilliant fete on the bank holiday, but we got soaking wet!), Bagnoles is lovely, and the cider museum at Mellerai is well worth a visit for some gifts/drinks to take home. Thanks very much for such a brilliant property for us to enjoy a much needed holiday in!

Our stay in Le Fournil

By Nicola And Tony From Orpington Kent on 03-Aug-2019

Well, what can we say - what a find. The setting of the cottage was perfect, never have we slept so well, the peace, the darkness, and the sky at night is magical. We had wonderful weather and enjoyed days in the garden, watching the wildlife, with a glass of something cold and fizzy in hand! Out and about we visited the nearby places. We found the town maps with points of interest really useful and made us aware of things we would otherwise have missed: places such as Domfront, Mayenne, Lassay-les-Chateaux and Bagnoles de l'Orne. One thing we found out quite early on was dinner was not an easy option and that lunch was the way to go -loads of excellent menus on offer , and so cheap and tasty. Swimming in the lake at La Ferte Mace was exhillarating to say the least, but worth it, and we couldn't believe we found a beach there! Bayeux was a long day out, but so worth it and interesting. Seeing the British war cemetery there was very emotional. We also went to Mont St Michel, to look at it -a sight to be seen, but so rammed inside, you were shuffling around and couldn't appreciate the place. All in all, we have had a wonderful time and can't thank Nigel and Paula (and Beattie) enough for a most fantastic holiday; their help and advice has been brilliant! We will be back …

My fortnight in Le Fournil

By Margaret Kirby on 19-Jul-2019

I have just returned from what I believe to be my 8th stay at Le Haut Fresnay, having travelled there on my own this time, I was very comfortable in Le Fournil! I have now stayed in all three of Nigel and Paula's cottages, initially with my husband at La Fresnaie, which was adapted to cope with his disabilities. When I lost my husband, I continued to visit, having stayed with family or friends at La Fermette, which was the original farmhouse and has 3 bedrooms. Le Fournil is also a delightful cottage, but smaller and cosier for smaller families. So there is a property to suit everyone's needs!

I have to say that I felt very comfortable travelling alone to Normandy. I was quite at ease visiting the local towns and villages, and having lunch in my favourite restaurants. I would be very happy to do it again. There are a variety of places to visit in the area, delightful historic towns and chateaux, many good local markets, displays or "spectacles" like Le Haras du Pin, the national stud, which I enjoyed this time. A little further away, but very easy to reach, there are the popular attractions of Mont St Michel, St Malo, Fougères, also the D-Day sites on the coast and at Bayeux. You can also enjoy more informal pursuits locally, like walking and cycling in this quiet part of Normandy. or just relax in the lovely garden at Le Haut Fresnay! You might just spot a red squirrel!

Nigel and Paula are really excellent hosts, welcoming you to the cottage and are always on hand to advise if needed. Thank you both very much once again, see you next year!

Le Fournil at Le Haut Fresnay

By Anne And Alan Lloyd on 26-May-2019

Earlier this year we decided that we would like a quiet break in a Normandy gite, not too far to travel from where we live in the South East. We searched the internet back in the spring and by mid May we found ourselves in a small complex of gites after a 4 hour ferry crossing from Newhaven to Dieppe, then a drive onto our destination in the Mayenne area via Caen. 'Our' gite Le Fournil, was one of the complexes sleeping up to 4 adults The building had originally been the Bake house. With everything supplied to make our stay comfortable, we enjoyed our relaxing week. The peacefulness of the site and all the surroundings made our stay a positive experience. We couldn't wait to explore! Upon waking the following morning we were delighted to look out of the bedroom windows at the garden and to listen to the birds singing. There was plenty of wildlife to see; as well as the birds busily nesting there were glimpses of red squirrels scampering in the garden and plenty of butterflies and bees. We were pleased to find the little shops and markets in the nearby towns and villages; these were convenient for our morning provisions, especially the fresh baguettes and croissants. We had already visited part of this area in the past, it was interesting to re-visit some of our previous discoveries as well find some new ones. We were very lucky to have had sunny, warm weather for most of our visit. The house and garden lived up to our expectations and thanks to Paula and Nigel, we did have a very relaxed and pleasant stay. Perhaps we will visit again in the future.
