Situated in the small hamlet of Le Haut Fresnay, some 8 miles from DOMFRONT in southern Normandy, Le Fournil is a stone-built, former 'bakehouse', standing in extensive grounds shared with helpful British owners. There are ponds and a stream, lawns and mature trees, and wildlife everywhere. You can see red squirrels, and birds of prey, and if you are lucky: hares, deer and even (rarely) wild boar! The peace and quiet is almost tangible. The local village, Lore, with its small supermarket, is within walking distance. Ceauce, a small market town with a range of shops,a bank and a small weekly market, is a couple of miles away, and just to the north is Domfront, a mediaeval market town with a fine church and a castle. Also nearby, you will find Lassay les Chateaux, with its picturesque castle, lake and rose garden. Bagnoles de l'Orne, about 15 miles away, is a spa resort set around a lake with a casino, many restaurants and smart shops.
There is plenty do do in the immediate area, and information is provided in the cottage. Local markets abound, and further afield, Mont St Michel, the D-day landing beaches, Le Mans, and there are seaside beaches that are easily accessible. Several of the northernmost Loire chateaux are reachable, and even Paris and Monet's Garden in Giverny are not too far for a (long) day out.
Le Fournil has an L shaped open plan ground floor including the living room, dining area, and kitchen.
The comfortable sitting area, arranged around the original bread oven, which is lit inside, has a sofa, armchairs and a coffee table. A flat screen TV provides British satellite tv and radio stations. A DVD player, an assortment of games, and a collection of books add to the possibilities for indoor entertainment.
The room is well lit by overhead, standard and table lamps.
The dining area is furnished with a table, 4 chairs and a welsh dresser.
The kitchen, with fitted oak units, has an electric oven with ceramic hob, a washing machine, dishwasher, microwave oven, electric kettle, toaster, and a 2-door fridge/freezer. It is well provided with cooking equipment, and there is plenty of matching crockery, cutlery and glassware.
The attractive staircase leads up to a small landing and the 2 bedrooms, the first with a double bed and the second with twin beds.
The double bedroom has a dressing table with drawers , a mirror and a lamp. The bedside tables provide more drawer space, and each has a reading lamp. The furniture is completed by a wardrobe and a couple of chairs.
The twin bedroom has single beds. Each has a bedside table with reading lamp. There is a wardrobe, a chest of drawers, and a chair. A cot can be put in this room if required.
The landing has a fixed stair-gate for the security of small children.
The bathroom has a shower, hand basin and WC.
A cot and highchair are available on request.
Wireless internet access is available.
Outside there is a private patio with garden furniture and a barbecue, providing your own sunlit space to eat, enjoy a glass of wine, or simply contemplate the peace and quiet, while watching the wildlife.
The rest of the grounds are yours to enjoy too, with several other plaches to sit in the sun. A picnic table near the "bug hotel" provides an extra place for meals, perhaps after a stroll through the valley and around the wildflower meadow.
