Description

Situated in the small hamlet of Le Haut Fresnay, some 8 miles from DOMFRONT in southern Normandy, Le Fournil is a stone-built, former 'bakehouse', standing in extensive grounds shared with helpful British owners. There are ponds and a stream, lawns and mature trees, and wildlife everywhere. You can see red squirrels, and birds of prey, and if you are lucky: hares, deer and even (rarely) wild boar! The peace and quiet is almost tangible. The local village, Lore, with its small supermarket, is within walking distance. Ceauce, a small market town with a range of shops,a bank and a small weekly market, is a couple of miles away, and just to the north is Domfront, a mediaeval market town with a fine church and a castle. Also nearby, you will find Lassay les Chateaux, with its picturesque castle, lake and rose garden. Bagnoles de l'Orne, about 15 miles away, is a spa resort set around a lake with a casino, many restaurants and smart shops.
There is plenty do do in the immediate area, and information is provided in the cottage. Local markets abound, and further afield, Mont St Michel, the D-day landing beaches, Le Mans, and there are seaside beaches that are easily accessible. Several of the northernmost Loire chateaux are reachable, and even Paris and Monet's Garden in Giverny are not too far for a (long) day out.

Le Fournil has an L-shaped open plan ground floor including the living room, dining area, and kitchen.
The comfortable sitting area, arranged around the original bread oven, which is lit inside, has a sofa, armchairs and a coffee table. A flat screen TV provides British satellite tv and radio stations. A DVD player, an assortment of games, and a collection of books add to the possibilities for indoor entertainment.
The room is well lit by overhead, standard and table lamps.
The dining area is furnished with a table, 4 chairs and a welsh dresser.
The kitchen, with fitted oak units, has an electric oven with ceramic hob, a washing machine, dishwasher, microwave oven, electric kettle, toaster, and a 2-door fridge/freezer. It is well provided with cooking equipment, and there is plenty of matching crockery, cutlery and glassware.
The attractive central staircase leads up to a small landing, the house bathroom and 2 bedrooms, the first with a double bed and the second with twin beds.
The double bedroom has a dressing table with drawers , a mirror and a lamp. The bedside tables provide more drawer space, and each has a reading lamp. The furniture is completed by a wardrobe and a couple of chairs.
The twin bedroom has single beds. Each has a bedside table with reading lamp. There is a wardrobe, a chest of drawers, and a chair. A cot can be put in this room if required.
The landing has a fixed stair-gate for the safety of small children.
The bathroom has a shower, hand basin and WC.
A cot and highchair are available on request.

Outside there is a private patio with garden furniture and a barbecue, providing your own sunlit space to eat, enjoy a glass of wine, or simply contemplate the peace and quiet, while watching the wildlife. The rest of the grounds are yours to enjoy too, with several other plaches to sit. either in the sun or in the shade.

Our stay in Le Fournil - May 2022

By Stephen Wenham on 30-May-2022

Set within beautiful grounds the cottage exceeded our expectations. Nigel and Paula were very helpful, friendly, discreet hosts and we were relaxed from the off. There are many places to visit within an hour’s drive and decent restaurants much closer. For those of us that appreciate dark skies star gazing is mesmerising. All in all a perfect location in which to relax and enjoy life.

Our stay in Le Fournil - Spring 2022

By Kerry and Jim Jones on 11-May-2022

After a very long wait following the Pandemic, we finally arrived at Le Haut Fresnay and we were not disappointed. Nigel and Paula were wonderful hosts and gave us a warm welcome when we arrived. We felt very cosy in Le Fournil which was equipped with everything we needed and the log burner was a real asset. We loved the peacefulness of the garden and had plenty of privacy. It was a haven of tranquility to return to after our day trips. We visited La Lassay Chateau, Mayenne and Domfront and a trip to Mont Le Michel was well worth the 1.5 hours getting there. I''m afraid for us a trip to Bayeux was a little too far in one day, but many other visitors had written that they had been and enjoyed it. Maybe next time! If you''re looking for a lovely place from which to explore lower Normandy, this is definitely it! We highly recommend Le Haut Fresnay, well done Nigel and Paula!

Our stay in Le Fournil in May 2022

By David and Dawn Blewitt on 21-Jun-2022

After 2 years, what a pleasure it was to return to France for a holiday. Le Fournil is situated in a beautiful area of France. There are many places of interest in the surrounding countryside and a great variety of markets and restaurants using the local products. The weekly markets in Bagnole de L''Orne, Lassay les Chateaux, Fougeres, and Ceauce are all excellent. We enjoyed meals at Le Grand Gousier in Domfront, La Terrasse in Bagnole, Au Bon Accueil at Juvigny sous Andaine, Cote Mer at Cancale and Auberge La Mine at La Ferriere-aux-Etangs. Nigel and Paula were generous and helpful hosts making our 3 week stay in their lovely cottage and garden very enjoyable.
