THE AREA

There are numerous activities, sights and attractions nearby, and the countryside is perfect for walking and cycling. During the winter skiing in the Pyrénées is an option.

The Atlantic beaches are 45 minutes away and offer a wide choice including the stylish resort Biarritz, the enchanting Basque village Bidart, the surfers’ paradise Hossegor, and the beautiful and popular St-Jean-de-Luz. Even closer (18 km) is Lac de Sames with a sandy beach, water slides and pedalos. Lac d'Orthez (24 km) has all this plus bumper boats. Base de Pop in Guiche is a lovely lake with free swimming, and paddle boards, boats and canoes to hire, but the main attraction is the enormous (and terrifying!) water jump which teenagers love, as well as an 'Aqua Park' for younger children and the less adventurous. San Sebastián in Spain, with a strong Basque character and fabulous beach, is less than 1 hour away.

The area has many excellent restaurants. As well as Chez Camy in Carresse, L'Escale on the banks of the Gave d'Oloron is within walking distance at just 800 metres away. There are a number of popular restaurants in Salies-de-Béarn but a firm favourite with the locals and visitors alike is La Belle Auberge, 4 km away in the small village of Castagnède.

Maison Mailhes is situated 6 km east of Sorde l'Abbaye, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the Chemin de St Jacques (Way of St James), an ancient pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostella which is still followed today. The Abbey retains some of the original (11th Century) mosaics and panels. Just 6 km away in the opposite direction is the beautiful and historic spa town of Salies-de-Béarn with its thermal baths, shops, restaurants and sporting facilities including golf and tennis. There are other fascinating medieval towns to explore close by including Sauveterre-de-Béarn, Orthez, Navarrenx and St Jean Pied de Port. A 25 minute drive south brings you to Saint-Palais, a market town in the Basque region and so with a very different style and culture.

The Gave (river) d’Oloron is within 10 minutes walk. It is one of only 2 rivers in France where the salmon still return naturally to their spawning grounds each year, and is reputedly one of the best fishing rivers in France. Our managers can organise fishing permits for our guests. The Gave is also good for swimming and kayaking, and there is white water rafting upstream and kayaks for hire in Sorde l'Abbaye.

This region of France is known for its gastronomy and each nearby town has its weekly market selling local produce as well as gift items and souvenirs. There are a number of supermarkets within a 10 or 15 minute drive for more routine shopping.

The only independent wine producer in the Béarn, Pascal Lapeyre, is just a few minutes away in Salies-de-Béarn. The Lapeyre family has been making wine here since 1909, and it is generally agreed that they produce the best wines in the Béarn. Look out for them – Domain Guilhemas and Domaine Lapeyre – in local restaurants and shops. Better still, call in and taste them and have a look at the huge oak barrels containing the aging wine before buying a few bottles to drink at Maison Mailhes or to take home as souvenirs.

For those who like to be active there’s an enormous choice, but many of our summer guests find it hard to tear themselves away from the lovely pool.

GETTING THERE

Biarritz and Pau airports are just ¾ hr drive from Maison Mailhes, Tarbes-Ossun-Lourdes 1 hr, Bordeaux 1¾ hrs, Toulouse 2¼ hrs. All are served by scheduled and lost-cost airlines from the UK and Ireland, are close to a motorway and have car hire available.

Bilbao ferry port is 131 miles, Santander 185 miles, St Malo 445 miles and Caen 490 miles. We can offer guests up to 10% discount on Brittany Ferries sailings between the UK and France or Spain.

TGVs from Paris stop at Puyoo (15 min drive) and Orthez (25 min drive). Car hire is available in Orthez close to the station.

Very enjoyable stay

By Victor Harris on 29-Jun-2024

If your choice is to stay here, you are in for a real treat. It’s clearly a home that’s been looked after and the standard of accommodation is high. A lovely welcome basket of treats, coffee, tea and wine was waiting, also as we had a dog, treats for her too! It’s a spacious house, with all the amenities and appliances you would need, set in a lovely big garden, outside dining area and an excellent pool to enjoy. Location is ideal to explore by car, nice walks on the doorstep and a nearby river to paddle and ideal of your dog loves water. Lots of restaurants /cafe in nearby Salies de Bearn, nice shops and as it’s known for its thermal water, a visit to the Thermal pool is really enjoyable. Comminucation/ directions from the owners, Debbie and Richard was excellent before we arrived. Definitely would return to this home and we would highly recommend it. Thank you

Family Holiday

By Paul Gascoine on 01-Jul-2023

There were seven of us staying at Maison Mailhes and everyone enjoyed themselves enormously. The pool is a great addition and in the heat it was used most of the time. The kitchen and all the facilities (TV had english channels) were in good order plus the amount of space in the property was well appreciated. The bakery within walking distance was really useful as it had roast chickens and other goodies on sundays as well as daily croissants. The three children had a whale of a time as well. Debbie the owner helped us out enormously with driving instructions, maps and so on to help us get there plus there is plentiful information in the property about the local area and the wider environs. We would recommend the abbeye d'sorde (10mins drive) for its amazing views and underground cavern.

A wonderful holiday house

By Jane Sik on 13-Aug-2022

We arrived just when the very hot weather had broken – a mix of weather but always good enough for some pleasant time in the pool. Long trips not considered because of the 2 & 3 year old but Salies-de-Béarn is a very pretty town with a good market on a Thursday. The Salt Museum was interesting for the adults but only the outside part – diggers moving salt etc – interested the two and three year old. The pool at the thermal spa is very good with lots of jets to massage aching joints. Treatments need 3 week advance booking at this time of year. There was a fête at the beginning of our stay with a piperade competition, bouncy castle. The kids liked "le petit train." Sauveterre-de-Béarn is a lovely town for a wander and a visit to a café. The patisserie there is very good – wonderful tarte aux pommes! The caves at Isturitz are beautiful. We could only book a French tour and she spoke too fast for me to follow much – the children were still impressed! A beautiful area of France. We went to Le plage de la Milady near Biarritz. which was very pleasant and good for children.. The wine from the caves Lapeyre was very good. the local boulangerie is excellent. The children’s swimming came on leaps and bounds. Two meals and also take away pizzas from Chez Camy – a lovely auberge. A good lunch at restaurant L’Escale across the bridge. A wonderful holiday in a delightful, comfortable, very well equipped house - lots of space to cook, eat and laze around. Thank you! Jane, Mike, David, Jen, Kev, Becky, Ivor (3), Oko (2) and Innes (4 months) (Ecosse)

Perfect French village life

By Nick D-P on 06-Aug-2022

We had a wonderful stay enjoying the comforts of a lovely home in a picturesque village. We enjoyed swimming in the pool and ventured down to the river for swim most evenings. Lots of places to visit and things to do from fun and vibrant towns to trips down the river by canoe, to trains up into the mountains. Perfect!

Maison Mailhes

By Pettitt on 11-Jul-2020

This lovely house is perfect for a large family holiday. It is situated in a small village which unlike many others has a thriving restaurant/ bar/ cafe, a bakery and a pharmacy. A short walk or bike ride takes you to the riverside where you can swim, the countryside is perfect for cycling and walking and there are lovely small French towns in every direction. Spain is less than an hour away as is the Atlantic coast- there are so many things to do! That said, you will find it hard to tear yourself away from the beautiful pool which is perfectly situated in full view of the outside eating area. The bedrooms are spacious, there are plenty of bathrooms and the kitchen is fantastic with plenty of room for a family of 12 to dine. It is extremely well equipped, not only with good quality china for dining but also with unbreakable crockery for picnicking or for use by the pool. My husband used the small study to work and there is a lounge should you ever have time to watch the television!.There is a large garden for the children to play in and a shed to store games and bikes. The owners are highly responsive and keen to ensure that you have a problem-free stay.
