The poet Dylan Thomas described Laugharne as “possibly the strangest town in Wales”. Its mystical beauty and natural charm were the inspiration for much of his poetry; “Poem on his Birthday” highlighted the beautiful cliff walks, whilst the characters in the famous “Under Milk Wood” were believed to be based on Laugharne folk. The township retains the same friendly, fun-loving culture and breathtaking views to this day.

Although there is a resident population of less than 1,500, a fascinating history includes Laugharne Castle dating back to the early 12th Century and a Royal Charter, which entitles the town to its own Corporation. The traditions remain, with an elected Portreeve and a host of fascinating activities which belie the town’s size. The glorious 7 mile long flat sand beach of Pendine offers almost limitless space for safe family fun and bathing, but is equally famous for holding the World Land Speed record in 1928, when Englishman Malcolm Campbell and Welshman Parry Thomas competed at speeds of over 170 miles per hour
