Description
It's been a hard couple of years for most families and there's nothing better than looking forward to sharing some quality time with your nearest and dearest. Booking The Old Farmhouse means that up to seven of you (eight if you use a pull-out) can escape to the country and enjoy a relaxing stay in 17 private acres of woodland and meadow with guest-only access to a large lake, streams and a half mile stretch of the River Fowey. It's the perfect place to unwind with plenty for everyone from bird-watching in the hide, to fishing the river for trout and salmon, to picnicking by the water, enjoying the swings or splashing in the stream in your wellies. If there are more of you wanting to get away, we have six other characterful properties at Rivermead Cottages and can accommodate up to thirty two guests if everywhere is booked, so no one needs to be left behind.
Dating back to the 1700s, The Old Farmhouse has a lot of character and is great for bringing the family together under one roof. There's a comfy, beamed lounge with three sofas and an inglenook fireplace with a log burning stove where you can meet up after a busy day's sightseeing and walking about in the fresh Cornish air. The lounge also has a TV, Freeview and DVD player. There's BT Superfast broadband/wifi across the site to keep all the generations happy.
Some of the other rooms in the cottage also have their original beams as well as thick stone walls. Upstairs there are creaky sloping floorboards and an uneven main staircase. After a good night's sleep undisturbed by street lights, you can join everyone for breakfast in the spacious dining kitchen which is well-equipped with a large wooden table with eight chairs, an electric oven and hob, fridge, freezer, microwave, dishwasher and wealth of kitchen utensils. You can request a slow cooker and food processor if you want to cook rather than go out and sample the wonderful array of restaurants all within a short drive. You'll have a washing-up starter pack, tea towel and oven gloves left for you in the kitchen as well as a welcome hamper.
There are four bedrooms in the cottage: three upstairs and one downstairs. The main bedroom on the first floor has a king-size bed, wardrobe, chest of drawers and dressing table and, across the hall, there's a beamed twin room with drawers, a hanging rail and a dressing table. These rooms share a large family bathroom with a full-size bath and a separate shower cubicle, WC and wash basin. Towels are provided for you as well as a bath mat and all the bedrooms in the cottage have a hairdryer. All of the rooms upstairs are south-facing and look out towards the cottage's garden and the Glynn Valley.
Downstairs, across the hall from the lounge, is a second large king-size bedroom which has original exposed beams and inglenook fireplace, bedside tables, hanging rail, dressing table and chest of drawers. This room is great for anyone with you who finds negotiating stairs difficult as it has access to a ground floor shower room with a shower cubicle, WC and wash basin. The fourth bedroom is a single room, with the option of an added single pull-out bed, with a built-in cupboard and dressing table. As it's reached via a separate staircase which you only find once you've walked through the bedroom downstairs, this room is like a hidden bedroom which children love!
Outside The Old Farmhouse, you have a small grassed garden area and a gravel seating area complete with picnic table, parasol, benches and a Weber BBQ. The outside space is south-facing so makes a great spot for sitting outside and watching the sunset over the trees or listening to the river. There's a fire pit in the grounds which is another perfect spot for meeting up with everyone at the end of the day. Some guests find that they don't leave the site as it's so peaceful here being close to nature and that's what makes Rivermead Cottages the perfect relaxing get-away.
If you are exploring further afield, you'll have the perfect base. Rivermead Cottages are about half-way between Bodmin and Liskeard. Bodmin Moor is 5 minutes away by car, and Looe, Charlestown, Fowey and Polperro can be reached in less than 20 minutes. There's a host of attractions within easy reach such as the NT gardens at Lanhydrock, the Eden Project, Golitha Falls and Lantic Bay. You'll find a wealth of information leaflets and suggested walks in the Rod Room.
