Description
If you're a close-knit family who love to holiday together, or a group of friends looking for a get-away together, the Old Farmhouse could be just what you're looking for. Set in 17 acres of beautiful Cornish countryside, the farmhouse has enough space for friends, grandparents, parents and children.
Booking the Old Farmhouse means that up to seven of you can escape to the country and enjoy a relaxing stay amongst the woodland and meadows with guest-only access to a large lake, streams and a half mile stretch of the River Fowey. It's the perfect place to unwind with plenty for everyone from bird-watching in the hide, to fishing the river for trout and salmon, to picnicking by the water, building dens in the woods, enjoying the swings or splashing in the stream in your wellies. If there are more of you wanting to get away, we have six other characterful properties at Rivermead Cottages and can accommodate up to thirty two guests if everywhere is booked, so no one needs to be left behind.
Dating back to the 1700s, the Old Farmhouse has a lot of character and is great for bringing the family together under one roof. There's a comfy, beamed lounge with three sofas and an inglenook fireplace with a log burning stove where you can meet up after a busy day's sightseeing and walking about in the fresh Cornish air. The lounge has a TV, Freeview and DVD player. There's BT Superfast broadband/wifi across the site to keep all the generations happy.
Some of the other rooms in the house also have their original beams, as well as thick stone walls, which keep inside beautifully cool on hot summer days. Upstairs there are creaky sloping floorboards and an uneven main staircase. After a good night's sleep undisturbed by street lighting, you can join everyone for breakfast in the spacious dining kitchen which is well-equipped with a large wooden table with eight chairs, an electric oven and hob, fridge, freezer, microwave, dishwasher and wealth of kitchen utensils. You can request a slow cooker and food processor if you want to cook rather than go out, but why not sample the wonderful array of restaurants just a short drive away? You'll have a washing-up starter pack, tea towel and oven gloves left for you in the kitchen as well as a welcome cream tea.
There are four bedrooms in the house: three upstairs and one downstairs. The main bedroom on the first floor has a king-size bed, bedside drawers, wardrobe, chest of drawers and dressing table. Across the landing there's a beamed twin room with bedside drawers, a hanging rail and a dressing table. These rooms share a family bathroom with a full-size bath plus a separate shower cubicle, WC and wash basin. Shower room towels are provided for you as well as a bath mat, and all the bedrooms have a hairdryer. All of the rooms are south-facing and look out towards the small private garden and the Glynn Valley.
Downstairs, across the hall from the lounge, is a second king-size bedroom which has original exposed beams and inglenook fireplace, bedside tables, hanging rail, dressing table and chest of drawers. This room is great for anyone with you who finds negotiating stairs difficult as it has access to a ground floor shower room with a shower cubicle, WC and wash basin. The fourth bedroom has a single bed with a built-in cupboard and dressing table. If you have small children, this room comes with the option of an added single pull-out bed (or we can put a fold-up bed in the downstairs bedroom, if needed). This bedroom, which we call the loft room, is reached via its own separate staircase so it's like a hidden bedroom, which our young visitors love.
Outside the Old Farmhouse, you have a small private garden area and a gravel seating area complete with picnic table, parasol, benches, BBQ and rotary clothes line. The outside space is south-facing so makes a great spot for sitting outside and watching the sunset over the trees or listening to the river. There's also a small, secluded courtyard accessed through the kitchen door, with a table and chairs, perfect for lazy morning breakfasts in your PJs. There's a fire pit in the grounds which is another perfect spot for meeting up with everyone at the end of the day. Some guests find that they don't leave the site as it's so peaceful here, being close to nature, and that's what makes Rivermead Cottages the perfect relaxing place to get away.
If you are exploring further afield, you'll have the perfect base. Rivermead Cottages are about half-way between Bodmin and Liskeard. Bodmin Moor is 5 minutes away by car, and Looe, Charlestown, Fowey and Polperro can be reached in less than 20 minutes. There's a host of attractions within easy reach such as the NT gardens at Lanhydrock, the Eden Project, Golitha Falls and Lantic Bay. You'll find a wealth of information leaflets and suggested walks in the Information Room.
