Boscastle is an idyllic fishing village with its harbour carved out of Cornwall’s rugged north coast. Just a minute up the hill is the famous old Napoleon Inn and a 10 minute stroll down through the cottage-lined street takes you to the harbour and its delights. Nearby are wonderful, unspoilt beaches and hidden coves to discover as well as coastal walks with breathtaking scenery. This is true Cornwall. The local area is a paradise for walkers: beautiful, wooded Valency Valley with its four ancient churches or there’s Bodmin Moor, just 15 minutes’ drive away. Or there’s the Camel Trail, a cycle route along an old railway line, starting at an old china clay mine and ending at Padstow harbour for the best fish and chips around. This is an area steeped in ancient history.

Just 10 minutes away is Tintagel, the setting for King Arthur’s cliff-top castle, it’s an area simply littered with reminders of prehistoric settlements: stone circles, cromlechs, wayside crosses call out for the attention of the curious mind. Visit old Bodmin Jail to learn about some of Cornwall’s grim past. The options are limitless, from the amazing surf of Whitesand Bay near Bude, to the brilliant Eden Project near St Austell, just a short hop across the peninsular – not forgetting the Lost Gardens of Heligan on the south coast. And at the end of the day, return to relax in your holiday cottage and just take in your days experience.
