Overview
Description
Dating back over 100 years, The Barn is a characterful conversion that was renovated in 2012 to provide a comfortable and modern holiday home which is also DOG Friendly. It is located next to the owner's house but has its own entrance and enclosed patio garden. It is situated in the village of Puncknowle, pronounced Punnel, a charming village of stone cottages surrounded by the beautiful Bride Valley on one side and a downland ridge on the other that shelters the village from the sea.The Barn is a great location for couples or small families wishing to experience the charm of the countryside but also being close to the amenities that the Jurassic coastline has to offer. The coast is about a mile away where you can explore the spectacular Chesil beach and Jurassic coast - the perfect location for beachcombing, fishing or just enjoying the spectacular views.
The ground floor offers a well-equipped kitchen where you can put together your next delicious meal. Come through to the lounge/diner and curl up after a busy day on the sofa in front of the TV. Upstairs are two comfortable double bedrooms. Relax outside in the evening air with a refreshing drink on the patio. The patio is surrounded by a high wall so you can relax knowing that all children and/or dogs can be contained safely. The Crown is the nearest pub and is around a three-minute walk. It is a traditional thatched pub with an inglenook fireplace to cosy up to in the winter whilst a spacious garden with wonderful views across the Bride valley is the perfect place to enjoy your drink in the summer. Providing meals and a variety of beverages including local beer, it could be the ideal place for a night off from cooking.
The market town of Bridport is only 5 miles away. It is one of the few market towns that has independent butchers, bakers and green grocers as well as many independent cafes and restaurants. There is a very popular street market every Saturday and Wednesday which hosts a wide variety of local produce as well as bric a brac and antiques.
Abbotsbury, a beautiful village with mainly thatched cottages, is under 5 miles away and has much to offer with its sub-tropical gardens and the Swannery bird reserve - it hosts the only swans in the country that are not owned by the Queen. Weymouth with its Georgian seafront, old harbour and sandy beach is a lazy drive along the coast road through picture postcard villages and breath-taking scenery to the East.
The Barn is the ideal base to explore the many options Dorset presents to guests either exploring the countryside and beaches by walking from the cottage or alternatively driving a short distance to explore further afield.

A perfect little hideaway
By Felicity Evans on 21-Jul-2026Sue and Steve are the perfect hosts - really friendly and welcoming, and happy to share all kinds of tips about the area to make your trip special, The Barn itself is a perfect bolthole, immaculately clean and comfortable. And Puncknowle is a dream village, with an incredible pub!

Lovely cottage
By Gurdev Patel on 10-Jul-2026Lovely cottage. We all loved our stay. Steve and Sue were helpful throughout our stay. Fresh scones on arrival very thoughtful. Could not fault anything and a friendly pub down the road to watch the football.

Five Star Stay at The Barn! Beautiful, dog friendly accommodation with Fantastic Hosts!
By Jane and Peter Bearne on 03-Jul-2026We had a wonderful stay at The Barn and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. From the moment we arrived, we felt welcomed by the lovely hosts, who were incredibly kind, friendly and helpful without ever being intrusive. Despite us booking at the last minute, they couldn't have been more accommodating. The Barn itself is beautifully presented and exceptionally well equipped, with everything you could possibly need for a comfortable and relaxing stay. The bedlinen is gorgeous and beds so comfortable. It really does feel like a home from home and Sue and Steve go the extra mile to ensure you have a lovely stay! Our dogs absolutely loved the fully enclosed courtyard, which meant they could enjoy the outside space safely while we relaxed. It's a perfect choice for anyone travelling with dogs. We loved the view from the kitchen window of the chickens scratching around in the gorgeous typically English country garden. Set in the beautiful village of Puncknowle, with its charming thatched cottages and the excellent Crown Inn just a short stroll away. An ideal location for exploring Dorset or simply unwinding and close to lots of amenities, stunning beaches and gorgeous bays. The Abbotsbury Sub-Tropical Gardens are not to be missed. We all had a wonderfully peaceful, restful few days and came home feeling completely refreshed. We wouldn't hesitate to stay here again – a truly superb cottage and fantastic hosts (deffo a return visit is on the cards!). Thank you guys. Simply Owners were a great company to deal with.

Lovely little cottage
By Tracy on 06-Jun-2026Lovely cottage in a great location. It was really well equipped and spotlessly clean. Fresh scones and cream on arrival! The hosts are really friendly (but not annoyingly so) and real dog people. The cottage is super dog friendly with throws on the sofa and chair so you can sit and have a cuddle with your dog. Perfect stay, thank you!

What a great find.
By Rick and Pauline on 29-May-2026This was a return visit for us as The Barn is an excellent place to stay for a week. It's location is close to beaches and countryside with many walks right outside the front door (perfect if you're a dog owner). Lyme Regis and Weymouth are close by and Abbotsbury Gardens are well worth a visit. The Barn is so well equipped with everything you need that it feels like home from home. Sue and Steve gave us a very warm welcome and the Cream Teas (delicious homemade scones) were very much appreciated. Thank you for everything Sue and Steve, another perfect stay.

It was so lovely to see you both again and of course Nelson, your gorgeous dog. Thank you for leaving everything so spotlessly clean and tidy - but you always do. Thank you.
Perfect get away from it all location.
By Paul Pitman on 20-Apr-2026Just back from a short break at the Barn. What a gem. Firstly Puncknowle, which is ideally located just off the coast road, making Bridport or Weymouth an easy drive. Loved the peace of the village and the church is well worth a visit, and very convenient for the Crown! The Barn is ideally located for access to short and long dog walks right from the front door. The Barn itself is perfect for a couple like us with 2 dogs. Downstairs has everything you could need, and upstairs are 2 large bedrooms. The feeling of space upstairs was lovely and the views from the bedrooms helped the feeling of being in the middle of nowhere. Particularly liked the dog safe courtyard, which managed to catch the morning and evening sun - perfect for a cuppa. The owners have created a lovely place to get away from it all. It's clean, cosy, and in a superb location for anyone wanting to enjoy the best of West Dorset and Devon.
