WELLS - NEXT - THE - SEA, NORTH NORFOLK
Wells-next-the-Sea offers sweeping sandy beaches fringed with colourful beach huts and shady pine woods. The harbour has a small working fishing fleet, families can enjoy boat trips and crabbing (gillying) from the quayside.
This area of Norfolk is wonderful for birdwatching, take a dawn or sunset stroll along the coastal footpath with views over the salt marshes.
There is an excellent visitor information centre at the Wells Maltings with details of places of interests and family activities in the surrounding area, events at Holkham Hall and Pensthorpe Natural Park. Cycle hire, including electric cycles, is available.
Wells has a varied selection of cafes, pubs and restaurants, with lots of picnic goodies at the bakers and deli’s. Temptations include freshly caught seafood, fish and chips, locally made ice-cream and Whin Hill Cider from the traditional ciderworks.
Walk from Wells along the beach or through the Pine Woods to Holkham Bay, there are refreshments and facilities at Wells and Holkham beach car parks, and at Holkham Hall. This is a lovely walk, if you want to shorten it catch the Coast Hopper bus for your return trip.
The Cottage
According to a local historian the cottage is one of the oldest properties in Wells, pre-dating 1586. The building used to be an Inn called 'The Grapes'. It is centrally located just a few steps from the bakers for your morning croissant or bacon butty! The quayside is a short walk away.

Love, love, love this cottage!
By Lee & Mel on 28-Sep-2026Love, love, love this cottage! We love coming here to make new memories and this lovely cottage is the perfect place to do that. Enjoyed long walks to Holkham and Stiffkey, and enjoyed a well-earned drink afterwards in the Golden Fleece. Had an amazing meal at the Crab House and great Sunday roast in the Globe. Can't wait to come back and stay again.
Truly special times
By Kate on 11-Sep-2026Spending a week elsewhere in Wells has confirmed how special your cottage is. We love being there. Each Autumn I ask the little ones if I should do the same next year and the answer is unanimous. Truly special times.
Icing on the cake
By Davina on 29-Apr-2026We love it here and your cottage in the middle of wonderful wells is the icing on the cake So close to our favourite Butchers and Deli where we bought some lovely crab yesterday morning. A walk to Holkam for me today along the back of the beach. Mabel’s having the best time too. Thank you for the wonderful stay here and with the next three days of sunshine forecast I’m hoping we go home having had our best ever holiday in Norfolk.
Fantastic few days
By Jo & Peter on 29-May-2026We all had a fantastic few days staying in your delightful cottage. The cottage is beautifully furnished, well equipped and perfectly located. We had a lovely picnic on the beach, rock pooling at East Runton, spotting the deer in Holkham Park, and the kiddies enjoyed the park. Would love to stay again, many thanks J, P, C, M, A & D
Lovely location
By Judith on 27-Jun-2026Very pretty cottage, well maintained and perfectly located close to harbour and high street. However, we found that the beds were not comfortable - the mattresses were hard, lumpy and twangy (we tried both double beds) - and not what we expected for the price of renting the cottage. Unfortunately the pillows were not comfortable either. We struggled to get a good night’s sleep.
