Overview
Description
WestholmeOur latest cottage, Westholme, is situated in the beautiful sleepy Yorkshire Dales village of Thwaite, in Swaledale. Just yards from The Pennine Way, which passes through the village, this lovely dog friendly cottage is a walker's paradise in a great location.
Westholme is in a truly special location. Nestled in between Great Shunner Fell and the mighty hulk of Kisdon, there are miles of beautiful walking trails from the doorstep, including The Pennine Way, the Coast to Coast Path National Trail as well as the popular Herriot Way, a 52-mile circular walk. Swaledale is considered to be the Yorkshire Dales' most beautiful dale and the quaint villages of Keld, Muker and Gunnerside are just minutes away.
Some of the regions finest gems are within walking distance or a few minutes drive away; waterfalls including Kisdon Force and Wain Wath Falls, the splendid and renowned Muker Meadows and of course The Buttertubs - a series of deep limestone potholes located just off the road so-named Buttertubs Pass - arguably the most stunning and dramatic road in the Yorkshire Dales!
A comfortable and cosy rural retreat, Westholme sleeps up to 4 guests in 2 attractive bedrooms. There is a small double bed in the smaller bedroom and a double in the large master bedroom. The shower room is presently ensuite to the master bedroom and comprises a shower cubicle and basin.
On the ground floor is the relaxing living room with characterful features, such as wooden ceiling beams, wooden floor and a rustic open fire! There is a TV with built in DVD player, an assortment of books and a fold out dining table. The kitchen is charming, light and is well-equipped, although at the moment there is no washing machine or tumble dryer available. In an enclosed room adjacent to the kitchen is the cottage's only WC, fully plumbed with a basin.
Like much of the Yorkshire Dales, regular mobile phone signal is limited, however, there is excellent free Wi-Fi available inside the cottage!
Outside the cottage, parking for one vehicle is available to the front and there is ample roadside parking very close by in the village. There is no garden, however, dogs may be exercised responsibly on the adjacent grassy common land and there are miles of paths and tracks around the village where dogs may be walked on lead. The cottage benefits from a single garage just a few metres away, where guests can store their bicycles and other belongings for the duration of their stay.
We love dogs and we take pride that Westholme is dog friendly, however, as it is not a very large cottage we feel it best to welcome up to 3 dogs*, for which there are no extra charges and no restrictions - dogs are allowed everywhere inside the cottage! We can supply additional throws for the furniture so they can be comfortable and relax - like their owners. *more can be arranged by prior agreement.
Westholme is the perfect base for exploring stunning Swaledale and is ideal for couples or solo travellers wanting to explore or simply relax and recharge in a beautiful and peaceful cottage.

January 2026 Review
By John on 15-Jan-2026Fantastic accommodation in a spectacular location! Jon and Kitty's cottage in Thwaite is warm, comfortable, spotless and the furnishings show great attention to detail and high quality. We had a great time, stopping for 5 nights in January 2026 - great walks from the front door in all directions. Recommend walk to Keld - lovely views en route, interesting museum, and winter cafe in the community hall. The Little White Bus links all villages along Swaledale. All highly recommended. Thanks for your welcome and consideration, Jon and Kitty.
