Anglesey Scenery and Sensory Highlights

The island has coastal landscape, wide skies and plenty of wildlife in a small area, with quiet spaces for autistic visitors and a strong sense of tradition and heritage for anyone living with dementia. Two short drives cover most of it. Take the road towards South Stack Lighthouse, where the upper RSPB car park has cliffside views and a second pull-in has a panorama. Then cross the Menai Suspension Bridge towards the Snowdonia mountains, with the flat, accessible Belgian Promenade nearby for waterside views.

Accessible Walking Routes and Boardwalks

Newborough Forest has the longest wheelchair-friendly trail on the island, starting from Llyn Parc Mawr car park on a well-surfaced path with benches every 50 metres. Cors Bodeilio National Nature Reserve has a fully accessible 700-metre boardwalk around the reed beds, and Cors Erddreiniog has a 1,000-metre boardwalk finishing at a bird hide overlooking a freshwater lake. The Llangefni and Cefni Reservoir trail runs 5.3km and is suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. At South Stack Cliffs RSPB reserve, a well-surfaced two-metre-wide track with benches runs from the lower car park into the heathland to a viewpoint in front of Ellin's Tower.

Accessible Beaches

At Newborough a Mobi-Mat takes wheelchair users across the dunes for views of the beach and coastline, and there is a beach wheelchair free from the beach car park. Benllech on the east coast sits in a crescent bay with fine golden sand and safe, shallow water, and there is practical access for both prams and wheelchair users. The Bay Café lends specialist beach wheelchairs free of charge.

Days Out: Beaumaris, Plas Newydd and Oriel Môn

Beaumaris is easiest along the flat seafront and promenade, with Blue Badge parking near the town centre and step-free access to many of the modern shops and cafés. Some of the older buildings have steps or narrow doorways, and the historic inland streets can be uneven or narrow. At the castle there is a portable hearing loop, automatic doors from the pavement, a low-profile admission desk and a flat, even route over a wide wooden bridge to the outer ward, but short narrow staircases lead to the monument itself and the wall walks. There are no toilets at the castle; the nearest are free public toilets 50 metres away on a flat, even walk, with accessible and baby-changing facilities. Plas Newydd House and Garden overlooks the Menai Strait, with level routes around the site, level access into the shop and food outlet, accessible toilets, hearing loops at all till points and drop-off points beside the house. Oriel Môn in Llangefni is fully wheelchair accessible, with an induction loop, disabled parking and the Caffi Bach Y Bocs, and holds significant collections by Kyffin Williams and Charles Tunnicliffe. Pili Palas Nature World at Menai Bridge has fully accessible indoor areas, three Blue Badge bays and a wheelchair on free loan, though the nature trail isn't suitable for wheelchairs.

Getting Around: Transport and Mobility Hire

Transport for Wales runs Passenger Assist for ramped boarding, help to your seat and a free accessible taxi where a station isn't accessible, with priority seating and accessible toilets on board. Low-floor buses with driver-deployed ramps cover local routes, and council-run Dial-A-Ride vehicles run flexible door-to-door travel. Traveline Cymru will plan an accessible route combining all of it.
