Thrandeston is a small sleepy village with just over 100 people has local events such as carveries and hog roast in June, dog shows, strawberry and cake afternoons to comedy evenings in the village hall. There is the local Mellis Tavern Pub, where you can enjoy a meal and take well behaved dogs. Curry night on Tuesdays and fish and chips on Friday with a band later in the evening. There are walks in abundance where you will can see many different types of wildlife, ducks with their ducklings, chickens roaming free, moor hens and their young, different types of birds, deer, rabbits and hares. Stoats and weasels, badgers (at night), hedgehogs etc etc. This region is ideal for those who like to walk, cycle or just rest with its variety of walks, pubs, castles, windmills, coastal areas and cities such as Southwold, Aldeburgh, Norwich and Bury St Edmunds. Cornhall in Diss has bands, theatre, plays etc and you can also have a meal there. Diss is a lovely little old fashioned town with a variety of shops and restaurants. There are many places to take the children (Monsters for the very young) and Bressingham Steam Railway for the older. Also Banham Zoo is great for all ages, with a very large Sunday morning car boot market. Stonham Barns is not too far way with a car boot sale Sunday mornings, owl sanctuary and shows, arts and craft shops, tea room and toddler soft ball area.
The coast line at Southwold and Aldeburgh are a delight to visit. There are towns and Cathedrals such as Bury St Edmund and Norwich to visit with art galleries, shops, restaurants and theatre. There is Wyken Vineyards where you can dine and walk round the grounds or just visit their shop. The Thornham Walks nearby has miles of walkways, hide to watch the wildlife, cafes and lots of interesting things to look at. Great for all ages and dog walking, with the oldest pub in Suffolk nearby “The Four Horseshoes” a pink thatched pub with lovely meals (also takes dogs). Lavenham is another fine place to visit and Beccles.
Many towns claim to be 'historic market towns', but there has been a market in the centre of Diss, on the Norfolk/Suffolk border for well over 500 years. The town, which lies in the beautiful Waveney Valley, was established around one of the deepest natural inland lakes in the country.
The town centre comprises some excellent examples of Georgian and Edwardian buildings, as well as a public park, the Mere and a number of thriving shopping streets and the market place. The Market operates every Friday and coincides with a local antiques and collectables auction which is held at Gazes Saleroom. Speciality markets, flea markets and farmers markets are also held regularly.
Other attractions in the area include the town's award winning museum located to the north of the Market Place, the wonderful Steam Museum and Gardens at Bressingham and the zoo at Banham.
