The island of Fuerteventura is the second largest of all the Canary Islands at nearly 650 square miles. It takes about two hours to drive from the north to the south on roads that are not busy. The scenery varies as you travel around the island — at times you are aware that north Africa is just 100km to the west, with rolling sand dunes and palm laden oases, at other times rugged mountains peaking at over eight hundred metres with magnificent views.
Nowhere can guarantee uninterrupted sunshine, but Fuerteventura does its best — and is pleasant most of the year rarely becoming silly hot or uncomfortably cold. It is on the same latitude as Florida and Mexico but is not as humid due to the drying warm breezes. Winter temperatures average at a high of 22 °C (72 °F) and a low of around 15 °C (59 °F) — the summer brings a mean high of 28 °C (82 °F) and a low of 20 °C (68 °F). Rainfall is about 150 mm (6 in) per year — most of which falls in the winter. December is the month with highest rainfall.
Unlike many of the other Canary Islands it has glorious, long golden sandy beaches — with no other Canary Islands offering as many — some say the most impressive beaches in the whole of Europe. Even in the height of summer, rarely crowded — with crystal clear water, azure skies and effervescent white breakers. The choice of beaches will suit everyone from calm lagoons, safe for children to breakers that will test the most adventurous.
The island is a mecca for water sports enthusiasts — and on virtually any day you can see body borders, wind surfers, wave surfers, kite surfers and diving. Even if you don’t partake, simply watching is a wonderful past time.
If you are a movie and TV buff Fuerteventura has seen many an A-lister — films such as Star Wars, Exodus, Don Quixote, Allied and more were shot on the island. For Doctor Who fans, the Parque Natural de Corralejo doubles as the Doctor’s home planet Gallifrey.
For tourists staying in Lajares, in the north, the island has much to entertain — from the main town of Corralejo in the north offering everything and anything, to the fishing village of El Cotillo on the west coast. Restaurant experiences vary from local fish and seafood, through to full and excellent international menus — you shouldn’t be disappointed.
Fuerteventura is the most easterly of the Canary Islands and the closest to the coast of Africa — it is the second largest island after Tenerife. The weather on Fuerteventura is similar to Florida and Mexico with about 3,000 hours of sunshine a year — all on the same latitude, yet only four hours ‘plane ride from the UK. Even in the depths of the UK winter temperatures can easily be 24°C during the day and a pleasant 16°C at night (obviously these can vary) — and more daylight hours with the sun setting after 18h30 when it’s been dark in the UK for two hours. The Canary Islands and UK are both in the same time zone.
