Menorca is the second largest of the Balearic Islands lying east of Majorca. Declared a Biosphere Reserve in 1993 by UNESCO the island is rightly proud of its clean environment, clear waters, fine sandy beaches and natural scenic beauty.
The official languages are Catalan and Spanish but you are likely to hear Menorquin spoken too which derived from all the invasions by various nations over hundreds of years. This is because stunning Mahon harbour is one of the largest natural deep water ports in the world and therefore of great strategic importance in the Mediterranean.
Menorca came late to tourism as its economy had always been supported by agriculture, mainly dairy farming and it exports milk, cheese and a variety of leather goods - particularly shoes.
There is very little high rise hotel development and a keen official eye is kept on preserving the relaxed charm, character and complex history of this family friendly island.
Complete restoration of the bridleway (Cami de Cavalls) that circumnavigates the island was finished in 2017. Fully signposted anyone can walk along a section to enjoy the spectacular views, go for a swim, paint, bird watch, take photographs or just enjoy some exercise in the sun.

Every town on the island has its own traditions and Fiestas are held successively in each throughout the summer months featuring exciting parades by the famous Menorcan black horses. They usually end with a spectacular midnight firework display.
