Wadebridge town is a great base from which to explore the surrounding area. It is a bustling community with many facilities – supermarkets, shops, cafes and pubs. The ship Inn is highly recommended for food and the Molesworth Arms is centrally located and has a great atmosphere. Both serve local beers.
Bicycles can be hired and it is popular to cycle along the Camel trail either to Bodmin or to Padstow. Along the trail is interesting bird life popular with bird watchers and conveniently situated hides along the way. Towards Bodmin you can sample some of the locally made wine at the Camel Valley Vineyard.
Bodmin is a thriving town. You can pay a visit to Bodmin prison which is now a museum, a visit not for the faint hearted. Around the area many of the scenes from Poldark were filmed in particular at St Breward and Blisland. Daphne Du Mauriers famous Jamaica Inn is situated on Bodmin moor.
Padstow is a working harbour where you can take the ferry across to Rock. You can also go on boat trips around the estuary to spot wildlife or go on an exhilarating speed boat ride.
There are shops, cafes, galleries where you can buy the local arts and crafts. It’s worth a visit to the Michelin starred restaurants of Rick Stein where you can sample the fresh catch of the day. Prideaux Place country house is popular with tourists largely due to the filming of the film’s inspired by the novelist Rosamunde Pilcher. Trevose golf course and country club is situated nearby for keen golfers.
The beaches around Padstow are dog friendly and again many of the beach scenes in Poldark are filmed in the area newly at Porthcothan Bay. It is also.popular to walk along the cliff top path and take in the breathtaking views. Across the estuary is Rock which is the place for keen sailors and a variety of watersports. Famous chef Nathan Outlaw has a restaurant at St Enodoc hotel. Along the coast from Rock is Daymer Bay which is a lovely beach for young families and also welcomes dogs.
Behind Daymer Bay is St Enodoc church, a picturesque place which is the final resting place of Sir John Betjemen. The St Enodoc Golf course is also situated here.
Along the cliff top you can walk to Polzeath which is a popular surfing beach. You can hire surfing gear, arrange surfing lessons or take a trip Costeering around the cliffs. There are useful facilities, cafes and shops here too.
The quaint working fishing village of Port Isaac is not too far away and is worth a visit. Again this is a popular tourist spot with people wanting to visit where the TV series Doc Martin is filmed. The cliff top walks around Port Isaac are highly recommended.
In the wider vicinity is Newquay with surfers Fistral beach, in particular Watergate bay where brunch overlooking the beach at Jamie Oliver’s restaurant Fifteen is highly recommended . Again the beach is popular with dog walkers.
For botanical enthusiasts The Eden Project, Lost Gardens of Heligon and Trebar gardens are all highly recommended.
